A 64 Corvette lifts off the ground and turns over.

’64 Corvette soars into the air and flips over.

Damn, what a crash. [“Walked away” with no major injuries reported](https://www.corvetteforum.com/articles/c2-drag-racer-catches-air-explodes/) Looks like it happened back in 2020.
N
still, the beauty of modern safety equipment. being able to walk away and go home to your loved ones is far perferable than “i’ll die like a man”
L
Since Reddit hides responses to highly downvoted comments now, I’ll explain here why “modern safety equipment” applies to an older car such as this. Gulfport Dragway is sanctioned by the World Drag Racing Alliance (or WDRA), and as such, the WDRA mandates a whole bunch of rules and regulations about what equipment both the car and the racer are required to have in order to participate in drag races – and the requirements only get more stringent the faster the car can go. If that car was outfitted with the equipment required by the WDRA, it had a roll cage (given that it was fast enough to achieve liftoff), and the driver had to wear a helmet along with a fire jacket/fire pants. Thanks to such modern safety equipment and the rules requiring them, the frame was reinforced to withstand landing on its nose and not turning into a metal accordion, and the driver was protected enough to escape the ensuing fireball without much trouble. That’s not even getting into all of the computerized systems, automatic shutoffs, etc. most racers implement under the hood – especially if they’re running nitro like this guy was. If you want to look at the full rulebook regarding racers and time-specific specifications, [here you go](https://www.racewdra.com/online-rulebook/). The National Hot Rod Association (or NHRA) is another large, governing body for dragways, but their rules are pretty much the same.

>Since Reddit hides responses to highly downvoted comments now I’ve been on reddit for 16 years (fml) and it has always done this. Did or does it not in the app or something? I use old.reddit, even on mobile.
Z
Yeah what do they mean hide? Like they can’t be expanded? They can on old.reddit, nothing has changed there
L
On the mobile app, anything below a heavily downvoted comment can no longer be expanded. The entire chain just disappears after the parent gets enough downvotes. It looks like nobody responded to it from a UI perspective.
T
Wow. That is a *terrible* change, given how improperly downvotes get used as a disagree button instead of their true purpose of being for non-addititve discourse. It also gives bullies way more power to silence people. I wonder if that’s site wide or if it’s a setting moderators can control for their subreddit.
Z
Why do they have to keep fucking with reddit? It used to so simple it was basically perfect.
A
Devs or managers working hard to justify their existence?
L
No idea, but it really is a horrendous change. Until now, I had no idea anybody replied to Jagazor. It wasn’t until I left the mobile app, and opened the comment in old.reddit that I was able to see all of the replies that talked about roll cages and fire gear.
S
Ah yes, another confirmation to never use the app or switch from old.reddit. Why are they trying so hard to ruin a good thing?
F
That’s awful, it doesn’t seem to do that on redreader or on old reddit in a browser
C
>I’ve been on reddit for 16 years (fml) *Cough*
L
dang boomers clogging up my reddit
C
I’m barely older than a millennial. (The oldest millennials turned 44 this year!)

Yea. The loss of that body is a tragedy. But ‘vettes were incredibly simple machines until recently. You can build a fully modern race car under a front engine ‘vette with a smidge more expertise than building a gaming PC.
D
Should have mandated an air dam and a spoiler
A
I’m just going to point out one of the biggest safety designs of modern cars, which is air dams, which force the air up or over the car. Because the last thing you want to do when going fast on land or water is create lift. Between the 70s and 80s racing cars began implementing air dams, as car designs became sleaker and more dart like. In the 80s, this transformed into designing the air dam to force the air up over the car creating down force on the front end. This design change has made cars more stable at higher speeds, and the importance and impact of this can be realized once a Nascar race car goes backwards in a forwards direction (gets turned around. They can quickly become airborne as the air is forced under the car instead of over it. Even the Corvette saw this change once the Stingray body style was adopted. The lower front end help push the front end down and move air up over the car.

Just a reminder to anyone who needs to hear it, 2020 was 15 years ago.

It’s 2025, Mr. Titor. You still have a bit to go.

See what happens when you don’t get the jab? You catch air and almost die.
O
You forgot to add “catches on fire”
J
Gotta leave a surprise for the dear viewers.

I’m not a deer, you goat.

I’m not a goat, you donkey.

Got me, that’s for damn sure. I saw it on my front page and it was next to a post from r/nonononoyes so I thought everything was going to be just *fine*. Lo and behold, it turns out everything was going to be just *fire*

The fire is assumed

I think it’s an implicit property of being a corvette.
M
That’s sad. What a pretty car.
F
Yea I dunno why someone would do this to such a classic car
I
That most likely just found one that had a bad engine and put in the drag one. At least she went out in flames like a badass instead of rotting in some barn or field.
M
Ya the amount of classic cars sitting in rural bone yards has got to be in the 10’s of thousands. Here in Canada and the states combined.
J
So many that it’s a core mechanic of the Forza Horizon games.
M
What do you mean? Never played those games.
K
There are several cars that can be discovered in barns in-game. You get a phone call about a car in a barn in a certain radius that you have to find.
B
I have a family maybe 1/2 a mile from me that used to own half the land on the island I live on. They parceled it off for residential but kept a good amount of land for their plethora of old vehicles. Due has two huge sheds full of projects. I don’t know enough about cars to give specifics but their old and not rusted out so vehicles like that would be fun to do something like this video with them.
