There are reasons why. 1. When crap hits the fan and stress hits, gross motor skills such as drawing and aiming center mass takes over. 2. Also hitting a small moving target (leg) is hard. 3. The officer is responsible for every bullet fired.

Also, there’s no guarantee that a leg shot will stop someone. Adrenaline makes people do crazy things, no drugs required. Shots to the torso sometimes won’t stop people. There’s a video out there of this same kinda deal happening in Athens, GA (IIRC) where the cop backs up for a loong ways before the guy with a knife finally runs at him. Cop puts 3-4 rounds into the guy’s torso, guy still gets the knife to the cop’s throat before his partner puts a round in the guy’s head.

It doesn’t make sense if you actually know firearms. Center of mass is the largest target. Shooting legs is very unlikely to stop his attack it’s also likely to hit unintended targets beyond when it either grazes, passes through or altogether (and likely) misses.

A “disabling shot to the legs” is also something that only really exists in movies. A gun loaded with real, live ammunition is a lethal weapon; if you fire at somebody, you are making an attempt to end their life. Fire at center mass, or use a different approach entirely.

Absolutely! Cop has **absolutely no idea** where that bullet ends up after he misses the guy. Pure negligence; it’s clearly in an urban area, there are probably scores of people in range of that bullet.

He’s scared and didn’t want to plug that kid. He was holding that pistol for protection, not defense. He prolly shouldn’t have been put there in the first place or trained better. Either way, most people who have seen the devastation of a modern firearm don’t want to shoot someone. They don’t build them to give people second chances.
