A typical day in Russia takes an unexpected turn.

Laid-back day in Russia

Like the two people standing really close together, like they’re on a date and making memories together.

Like the people on the bridge. Watching Chernobyl Reactor 4 burn, while radioactive ash fell all around them.

Watching an explosion and toxic fire from an overpass is a Russian tradition. 3.6/5, not great, not terrible.

I mean, yeah, the country has been at war for 4 years. At this point, these people are kind of beyond flinching at explosions; they’re just like “welp, I guess we’re bombing Kiev again tonight, dumplings for dinner, babe?” I’ll see if I can find it, but one of the most striking videos I’ve seen from this war was not the aftermath of some missile strike, or even any of the gruesome FPV drone kills, but an interview with a middle aged lady in some nameless village in Donbas. The reporter was all done up in armor — helmet, plate carrier with PRESS stamped on it, the works — and she was in a drab house dress, giving seemingly zero fucks. The sounds of artillery shells dropping somewhere uncomfortably close kept making the reporter duck and cover, and the old lady didn’t even *flinch*, just kept on talking about whatever. That shit’s just background noise now. Nobody is expecting the war to end anymore; it has simply become the new normal.

Sounds like Patrick Lancaster in Donetsk. BEFORE HE GOT TOO CLOSE TO THE ARTILLERY AND STARTED HAVING HEARING PROBLEMS.

Patrick Lancaster is fucking insane, bro. I’ve been follow a few frontline reporters from the Russian side over the years to try and get a peek of the other side, and sooo many of them have been killed. It doesn’t matter if you’re plastered with PRESS patches, you still just look like a dude in armor on a shitty FPV feed, and landmines don’t care about anything. But somehow Patrick survives year after year. Crazy.

When Russians start cursing like that you know the shit is really hitting the fan. Russians seem to curse like that a LOT, though. This may or may not indicate something about the Russian experience.

In your country, a refinery explosion is the biggest news of the year. For Russians, it was a tuesday

What do you think?
