The hunter turns into the hunted.
in WTF
The hunter finds themselves in the role of the hunted.

T
Definitely not the first time this guy’s been hit with a fish
C
Bro laughed it off like it was just another tuesday
S
He was definitely just glad he didn’t end up in the propeller.
L
Every life or death situation is always funny afterwards
D
unless…y’know…
D
They live
F
Damn… Knocked out and head on into the blender ffs….
C
I spent three years doing forestry work from a boat on the Mississippi River. When we got down by Quincy, Illinois we couldn’t run more than at idle or 20-40lb fish torpedoes would launch at us. My field assistant for this section of the project vastly overstated his capabilities and was frankly a childish annoying ass. He got on my nerves real bad one day when we were in an area we knew they schooled in huge numbers. He mouthed off, I gunned the engine, and he took a 40ish pound big eye carp to the head that carried him into the water. He didn’t run his mouth anymore for the remainder of that two week trip, and fired him when we got home. Not to mention the fact he spent the entire time we were In the field trying to convince me I should try meth.
S
So…. did you try meth or what?
C
Nah, I’ll stick with my reefers and mushrooms.
L
God dam vegetarians /s
H
I’m pretty sure meth is vegan…
T
Eww wtf miss me with that vegan shit. Now I have to quit meth and regret my days of using it? What an awful day.
T
Man, they always *really* want you to try it too. Just take the fucking no.
I
It’s actually really fucking fun. And you can be so productive on it.

I
That reminds me of doing meth and playing Battlefield 4 for 12-24 hours straight. It’s wild. Don’t try it. You will love it.
A
Why do the fish jump at you if you’re going quick?
C
It’s their threat response. A good way to not be eaten by aquatic predators is to temporarily get out of the water.
[
The Asian carp have devastated our fresh water ecosystems. Whoever released them here deserves a life sentence behind bars.
M
https://dnr.illinois.gov/waterresources/asiancarp.html The fisheries argue the USDA let them import the carp, the USDA claims they didn’t know the carp weren’t properly contained, and now all of us on the Great Lakes have to hope that they don’t start turning up here next. Tom Scott did a good video about the barrier effort: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3oLeSPINOk
[
That’s such a shame. I wish you all the best with that endeavor. Unfortunately it’s too late for us south of Illinois. The rivers and creeks I grew up swimming/boating in are ruined. It’s definitely a heartache.
M
Well you’re welcome to enjoy some swimming and boating up here – Niagara region has a lot of nice spots! I hope things get better for you down there though, what a shame.
[
I might have to take you up on that offer, thanks❤️
S
I’m dumb and curious as to why having these carp in water makes it not swimmable now?
V
They are just super invasive, eat everything, and destroy the indigenous populations. They are fairly big but they don’t necessarily prevent a human from swimming. Just look up Asian carp fishing on YouTube. Here is just one example https://youtu.be/bqcbEF4c-uM?si=o-xOEIPRzhZVqa3E
I
Why are they ruined? Are the carp aggressive towards people?
[
Besides overbreeding and making it harder for the native fish to survive, the asian carp, for some reason are attracted to the hum of boat motors, and will jump out of the water all at once while you’re moving above them, striking anyone and everything like that shown above in this video. It hurts like hell getting pelted in the head by a fish that size and makes it dangerous for everyone on the boat. Also they are considered to be of poor quality when it comes to eating them. So all around they are an invasive nuisance, that shouldn’t have been released in our waters. Kind of like the situation in Florida’s Everglades, exotic pet snakes and iguanas let loose are overpopulating and pushing out native wildlife.
I
That’s actually awful and I’m glad we don’t have them here
[
This is a video of what I explained if you’re interested. They are truly horrible to encounter. https://youtu.be/qb3R3XMcGkM?si=HKaJbInVguEGOwJ4
O
Thats wild. But if they jump out because of the hum of motors, couldn’t you just cruise with a big ass empty boat and let them jump in themselves?
[
You could, but they don’t taste good. Wouldn’t recommend doing that.
A
I mean, that’s just wrong. Asian carp are delicious especially steamed with scallion oil and soy sauce. They are boney but honestly that’s just a skill issue. Children in China learn to eat around fish bones as soon as they can hold chop sticks. The flesh of asian carp species is very delicate and tasty as long as you don’t overcook it.
C
Using electricity works better, still not effective enough though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0EYv8yod3A
J
There have been in the past competitions where people go out in hockey gear with empty boats and see who can catch the most the fastest. They filled a couple 40yd dumpsters in a little town in IL in one video I watched. They were hauling all the fish to a place to make like dog food or something. Anyway; basically what you say can and has been done.
D
Invasive species that takes over entire ecosystems and displaces or outcompetes all the native fish until they’re the only thing left.
L
Just import piranhas and let them sort it out.
S
Cane toads, surely
S
Well with the defunded agencies that were dealing with the invasive species in the great lakes it’ll happen without people knowing. It’ll be up to the Canadians
[
Asian carp, Asian lady beetle, Chinese Chestnut trees. Enough is enough.
P
You forgot Spotted Lanternfly and Tree of Heaven
M
Where I am, one of the worst invasive is Japanese Knotweed
J
Have you seen Scottish Broom? We planted it over here thinking the yellow flowers were lovely and that it would be a good grazing plant. It actually grows so well here it crowds out and decimates native plants, it’s actually toxic for grazing, and it’s so flammable it contributed to the wildfires in California. So now we have this hard to control weed with seed pods that can stay viable for 20+ years after you think you’ve cleared an area.
C
Also Kudzu, Japanese Knotweed and motherfucking Bamboo.
P
And Japanese Beetles
P
Maybe ICE could try deporting those immigrants instead?
G
And those damn geese. I’ve NEVER seen one with a proper visa.
[
g’damn Canadians.
_
Don’t forget the Asian Giant Hornets, also known as Murder Hornets in the Pacific Northwest, from a few years ago. Luckily, we’ve been able to eradicate them recently.
S
Serious question: do any North or South American species endanger ecosystems in Asia?
