He left his keys behind and requested his cat to unlock the door.

**What Happened:** Tom had just come back from grocery shopping, juggling bags of cat food and snacks for himself, when he realized he had locked himself out of his apartment. In a moment of desperation and sheer silliness, he looked down at his cat, Whiskers, perched on the windowsill, and jokingly said, “Hey, buddy, could you give the door a try?” To his astonishment, Whiskers just stared back with those big, indifferent eyes, as if contemplating the meaning of life—or maybe just whether he’d rather nap or not.

**Why It’s Funny:** The sight of Tom earnestly pleading with his unimpressed cat to use the doorknob like some furry locksmith is a comedy classic. I mean, we’ve all seen pets play with all kinds of things, but a key? A doorknob? That was a level of expectation that even the most skilled feline wouldn’t attempt! Watching Tom’s hopeful face morph into one of resignation as he took a seat on the floor next to Whiskers, who then proceeded to nonchalantly groom himself, was a comical reminder that in the battle of man versus cat, the cat always wins—especially when you’re locked out.

Hopefully, the cat can recognize his voice from anyone else’s.

They absolutely can. Mine recognize my footsteps. They always know when I get out of the elevator of apartment building. They’re waiting by the door by the time I get there.

We had a cat that recognised my dad’s car. She was mostly outdoor only and would wander around the whole neighbourhood. Sometimes my dad got off work early and picked me up from school. As soon as we pulled into the subdivision and turned onto the main street, she’d appear out of nowhere and be running alongside all the way to the house.

My cat recognizes two vehicles, and it’s so funny when the one I don’t drive pulls in. It’s like her long lost best pal just returned from a grand adventure.

I grew up with cats like that. They recognized the car, the footsteps of people in my family and how we opened doors. You could see them sprinting home as we pulled in.

Do you open the door to the building with a code or keycard? If so, the intercom probably makes a sound when you do

G
ghoulthebraineater • 47 points
No. There’s a secure entrance downstairs but I use a key. My apartment is near the elevator and they definitely hear it or if someone is in the hallway. When my ex still lived here she would watch them get up and go to the door when I would get out of the elevator. They always knew when it was me and not someone else. It’s very clear that they know the difference between me and anyone else before I even open the door. I have absolutely no doubt that they can recognize my voice.

If I don’t make a concerted effort to be as stealthy as possible my Kitty is right at the door when I get home every time. If I am stealthy/he is sleepy he peaks around the corner and meows and if I give him a little whistle he comes right over knowing it’s me.

My childhood dog could easily recognize my dad’s truck. Right when it turned down our street he would go to the back door and start getting excited. Only did it when Dads truck rolled up. Lots of trucks in the neighborhood too. Cats have even better hearing than dogs, even over a long distance. That cat knows what’s up, that cat knows their owner.

Mine old boy would do the same. I lived on the 7th floor, so there was no way it was from an intercom or keycard. And I had varied hours.

I fully believe it’s the footprints that the cat is recognizing, because our cat perks up every timr he hears my girlfriend coming up the stairs of our apartment building. He knows thr difference between her footseps and our neighbors’. No other sounds in the hall he’d be latching on to instead, just footsteps!

My cats can hear my wife drive into the driveway but freak out when they hear a delivery driver approaching the door before I can even hear anything. I wouldn’t think they can tell by sound alone but they seem to know her by sound before they can even see her. My mother often pulls into my wife’s parking space in the middle of the day and so it’s not just the sound if a car parking because they don’t even acknowledge my mother but also don’t run to hide like a delivery driver or someone else approaching my door. It’s uncanny that they can detect the differences enough for me to notice that I have a delivery arriving or my wife coming home from work based on what the cats do.

My cat used to recognize my car turning on the the neighboring street. My father was staying with me, and she basically ignored him, and he would watch her run up to sit at the window about 3 to 5 minutes before I would come home. I didnt have a regular return time, so it wasn’t a schedule thing. Just knew the sound of my tires on the pavement.

Do they wait by the door for other people?

G
ghoulthebraineater • 1 points
No. They usually hide if it’s anyone else.

Mine recognizes my breathing, and I’m not a heavy breather.

T

And how do you know they don’t do that for anyone else when you aren’t home?

G

My daughter and my ex both told me.

I had a roommate that said my cat could hear when I took my keys out of my pocket on the sidewalk in front of our place.

Indeed, that is highly probable. Despite their seeming indifference, cats are surprisingly adept at identifying their owners voices.

I mean a tin of fancy feast and they will open it for anyone, regardless of the voice haha

Mine recognize my husbands work truck pulling into the driveway! They’ll freeze and look towards the front of the house, then when they hear the car door shut they sprint to the front door to greet him before I even hear his footsteps waking up the steps.

B
Buschwick66 • 1 points
Yes. The cat would not have even close to that door if it was a strange voice.

What do you think?
