Remember me, Eddie? When I killed your brother?! I talked just… like… THIS!

Such a fuckin’ dark movie. The shoe scene is still a core horror moment, like Atreyu.

That scene was childhood PTSD.

Or preparing us for the future. Having to deal with a major loss and needing to overcome because we have a job to do, a people are relying on us. Predator quote; I ain’t got time to bleed!

That idiot should have known better. Never bring a horse into the swamp of sadness. They always have a long face.

In the book it’s worse. The horse can talk

Fun little trivia: Tim Curry originally auditioned for the role of Judge Doom, but during his audition the producers found him too terrifying for the role.

Same thing with Tim Curry for Batman The Animated Series. He tested for Joker and his performance was too dark.

And then he did Nigel thornberry hilariously as well

How did I make it until 33 and not realize it was him playing nigel….

That’s okay. [He escaped to the *one place* that hasn’t been corrupted by capitalism – *space!*](https://youtu.be/niZpcdp2v34) But that’s also okay; rumor has it he came from space with his faithful servants / companions, Riff Raff and Magenta.

That second before he says “SPACE!!!” is full of so much expression hahaha

M

He’s trying so hard not to bust up laughing, lmao. Considering this is the take they actually used, imagine how many times he must have just cracked up and had to start over.

C
CedarWolf • 13 points
He’s also trying to portray a megalomaniac who is on the edge of full mental break after being defeated several times, so it completely works in context.

Entirely fair! Lol.

I still occasionally have toon Christopher Lloyd nightmares 35 years later so I’m not sure how Tim could have made it even darker

Yeah especially when they throw that poor little shoe into the dip.

In the cinema release, the shoe cries, sputters, and gurgles, “I can feel my sole burning. Help me,” before fully dissolving. The little kids in the theater were screaming in terror. The VHS edit cuts to a fade transition just as the shoe reacts to the dip.

That sounds misremembered or made up. The scene would have to be completely reanimated to make it speak, [its mouth dissolves first](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYk3LvHMPWM). The shoe character [only ever squeaks](https://youtu.be/4J_eB_ocTCs?t=179) up to the point of its dipping, it’s supposed to look like a small animal like a puppy. That’s the point of the scene, to show Judge Doom would have no qualms in painfully torturing a small helpless “animal” toon. In TV Tropes terms, “[Kick the dog](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KickTheDog)”. (It’s even on the examples page). To have the shoe suddenly start talking in some goofy voice, making terrible puns would completely change the tone of the scene and ruin it.

I have a VHS that shows the entire thing

Same! I just watched it the other day for the first time in like 20 years and holy shit that movie was just jam packed full of content I probably wouldn’t show to a kid today 😂 Want to be terrified? ✅ Want to become attracted to a cartoon? ✅ Space Jam and Who Framed Roger Rabbit out here messing with young men’s heads 😂

As a little girl who saw *Who Framed Roger Rabbit?* in the theater and wore out my VHS copy, Jessica Rabbit made me totally try to lean into being sexy. Also between her and [Paula Abdul](https://youtu.be/xweiQukBM_k?si=sMXo3SvoArApZr66) I wanted a goofy cartoon boyfriend. Aw to be a little kid again!

Whenever someone mentions the dip scene, someone else almost invariably points out that the shoes escape from the box in *pairs*. The little shoe that got dipped has a twin, a mate, a matching shoe. Hopefully they got put back in the crate with the other shoes before their partner got dipped. Which is worse, getting dipped, or having to watch your sibling, your other half, get dipped? Also, the Judge dips the shoe to say that he wants the toons in Toon Town to respect the law, but then he produces his own weasely goon squad and straight up murders one right in front of the police and no one does anything about it.

Jesus I never thought of the other shoe finding itself alone 😭

Geez that’s horrible!
