I had to deal with a horrible one of these contracting in Afghanistan. Time the weather report was off so it caught us by surprise. That shit was rolling in looking like the film The Mummy with lightning traveling up the storm and we were trying to get the teathered aerostat down as quick as possible. The soldiers were on the hescos filming the storm telling us that we weren’t going to get it down in time. They were right lol.

“I don’t like younglings. They’re coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.”

I used to work for a company designing aerostats, and I can’t imagine trying to get one of those things moored during a sandstorm. Depending on the size of the aerostat, those things can be downright dangerous af, even in just a stiff wind.

Yep same. The first two were awesome to watch roll in, just because it was new and weird. Then it kept happening and quickly became annoying.

I was watching one of these roll in once, right as its starting to get close, a pair of Cobra attack helicopters come zooming in real low right over my head trying to land and beat the storm. They were so low I could see the whites of the pilot’s eyes, it was pretty incredible

We always called them Imohtep from the 1999 classic movie The Mummy. Man it’s impressive to watch a wall move towards you at an alarming speed

What if Darude “Sandstorm” played during every Sandstorm? Worth it then?

This is my nightmare. I absolutely hate getting stuff like sand and dirt in my house and on my floors so I’m regularly vacuuming so I can walk around barefoot and feel good while doing so. With shit like this happening there’s no shot of that ever happening I feel like you would just need to live in sandals and adjust to that film. Awful, no shot I would ever willingly live in this area.

Some sort of filtered air intake for the house would help. Suction of air escaping might otherwise pull sand/dust into your house. Control that and flip it by sucking air in through a filtered path that pressurizes the house and blows a small amount of clean interior air out all the tiny gaps and cracks.

Imagining a couple of lungs with two inches of dirt is not a pleasant thought

on my 2nd deployed i went through pre-mob training in a very rural part of Missouri. went to a barber who told me his kid had severe health issues till they figured out his lungs and stomach had piles of dirt and sand in it from a previous deployment

only casualty my unit took the whole time was our last day in Iraq. flight got delayed for 3 straight days because of these things and on the third day we took IDF and it landed in the tents next to me and killed a guy from another platoon.

Sheeeeesh. Sorry that happened. I distinctly remember the grit in my teeth everyday from the silt. I hate that place.
