A closer look at the peculiarities of muscle cramps…

S
Respect for not screaming like a little girl
P
Seriously. I had this happen to my quads once when I had an electrolyte imbalance, the pain was so bad it actually made me cry lol.
J
Did you get a blood test to determine that? Is there a special brand of electrolytes they recommended? I cramp pretty badly when I exercise and I’m already drinking a decent amount of water everyday. I do a set of pull-ups, lats cramp. Stretch my arms, peck cramps. The leg cramps after a tough cardio session are similar to OPs in the video.
D
It’s because just water often isn’t enough, especially when you’re sweating alot. You sweat, you lose electrolytes, you lose lose enough electrolytes and you cramp. I typically use the propel packets I get at Walmart cause they’re cheap and effective enough. For reference I work construction and drink a gallon of water a day at work. On hot days, the difference a few electrolyte packs can make is unreal.
G
And let’s not forget that you need a certain amount of salt for the water to be absorbed, and your body usually has to provide that when you only drink water
D
The bigger issue is that if it’s cramps rather than general neural problems, it’s more likely to be a ~~Magnesium~~Calcium problem than (table)salt or water. Because ~~Mg~~ calcium ions are what facilitate the muscle action (particularly “letting go”), and while the neurons that do the signaling do need Sodium and chloride, they do need that ANYWHERE not just for muscles.
S
Yeah I was also thinking the lack of calcium. Drink more milk!
D
1. Specifically non-vegan-actuallyanimal-milk. (That needs clarifying today I figure, or else someone goes “I drink Almond milk all day”…) 2. There are other ways this can happen, I only brought it up because the foreposter specifically went “water / salt”. 3. There are other ways to keep up with the calcium demand than dairy (which is problematic for various types of people for various reason)
H
Brawndo’s got electrolytes and it’s good enough for plants…
T
If you don’t drink Brawndo then FUCK YOU!
J
I’ll check it out. Thanks
S
It’s got what plants crave.
S
Welcome to Costco, I love you.
S
Go away, I’m batin!
A
He’s joking. That’s from the movie Idiocracy. Pedialite has an adult sports drink that might be what you’re looking for. The children’s version the company started with was sold at the PX on the base I did combat training for the Marine corps at and recommended by the instructors. The sports drink they make now I assume is at least as good.
C
Straight water usually flushes out electrolytes, especially as you sweat and pee. You can start with sports drinks like Gatorade or Energade, then work your way up to specialist stuff if your dietary requirements are too strict for typical sports drinks.
P
They do crave it. Maybe that’s what the muscle does when it craves Brando.
S
Body Armor is actually pretty damn good. It’s got electrolytes but more importantly for cramps a good amount of potassium. I get cramps all over woke up to exactly what’s in this video occasionally sucks. As an alcoholic when I go on bad binges the cramps are bad and ironically when I’m sober, lifting, being healthy bad too. Whenever I’d start cramping up I’d eat a bunch of spinach or a banana, buying a Body Armor is way easier. The only thing with the drinks is they taste like baby food at first and you have to get used to it.
A
this!!!!! Body Armor FTW! SO MUCH potassium to knock out any cramping! Works wonders! I swear by this stuff! Also have to agree about the flavor… not a huge fan, but I treat it as more medicinal than a “drink.” I just chug it to get my dose of potassium.
S
I actually kinda like the flavors now. Especially when I really need one I can feel the cold flavor surging through my body. My body is like yup this is the stuff.
E
The Peach Mango Lyte is my favorite. It’s sweet as hell, but only 20 calories with potassium, Magnesium, calcium, Vitamins D, A, E B5, 6, and 12
O
Electrolytes are sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium.
P
>It’s got electrolytes but more importantly for cramps a good amount of potassium. Potassium is an electrolyte, just fyi.
M
You can just do Water, lemon, salt and some sugar. Drinking too much water can actually flush out electrolytes. I’ve been getting Tevi, since I started working out again. They have no sugar (sugar is better if you need them from drinking alcohol, or if you drink helps you absorb more) the brands like Liquid IV have sugar. They are cheaper then gatorade, but the powered gatroade isn’t that costly. I have a hard time justify a $2.50 a day drink, but the $.10-$.50 for the powered stuff I can do
U
I tend to get leg cramps when dehydrated, I started making my own electrolyte mix based on this one https://a.co/d/g6psgA3 but I buy bulk powders myself and mix it to the same ratios. it’s mostly potassium citrated, like 90% , then some magnesium citrate, like 10% then a sprinkle of plain salt, you can get the ratios right off the labels. mix it with a little sugarless drink mix or iced tea. I keep a jug of it in the fridge and and have at least a glass a day, more if I’m exercising or hung over. I used to do the same thing by simply sprinkling the heart safe salt in my drinks, it mostly potassium.
N
You should definitely see a doc about that
J
Yeah, I know! I can be stupid sometimes. My wife is constantly on me about it.
C
Did a super long bike tour my quads cramped like crazy crazy pain, they gave me a glass of pickle juice and in 10 min I was fine.
N
This just happened to me the other day and I almost passed out lol.
G
[Still screaming from when this was posted back in 2020.](https://www.reddit.com/r/MakeMeSuffer/comments/hzgjxx/post_workout_muscle_cramp/)
W
That’s yet the Fight The Urge To Bend stage. It’s already problematic and hurtful, yet not the worst. The worst is the I’ve Submitted To The Urge To Bend stage, which is by at least a tenfold more painful.
S
I had one portion of my quads cramp up like that, once it got into the bend stage the pain went through the roof. The only thing that made it stop was tens unit massager (the electrical pulse massager) and even then it took more than usual. I had sweat and worked in awful heat that day. I sweat enough to where I could ring out three shirts with sweat and I guess i didn’t replace enough water and electrolytes and the cramp that night was the result. Horrible experience.
F
I’ve had that while driving. Not bad if you’re going at a constant speed, but suddenly if you’re in gridlock…fml
M
I had this after pinching a nerve in my back. Every 30 min on the dot for a solid 5 minutes just brutal cramping in my calf. Screamed in agony every time Didn’t sleep a wink that night. It cramped so hard it tore the muscle and I lost 80 % strength in my calf. Took years of pt I’m still only like 75% strength in that calf.
P
I had the same thing happened in my back. The cramping tore muscles. I could feel it happening. Horrifying
S
does this type of thing just happen if you sit wrongly randomly like did they ever tell you why this happened or try to figure it out? horrifying
M
I was mowing my lawn and the lawn mower started sliding in a small ditch so I tried to yank it out and twisted funny threw my back out bad instantly fell to the ground. Pinched nerve in lower back. The cramping didn’t start until around 9pm and didn’t stop until I went to the ER at 7 am. Damage was already done.
S
I get them on the bottom of my feet if I sit on my knees, especially if I try to lift myself up or down in that position. I do typically scream like a little girl because it usually happens in the halfway position where I’m not all the way down but I haven’t quite stood up yet, so I have to sort of hover like they got a minute or it feels like my muscles are being pulled out my body
P
Trick to fix muscle cramps: make the muscle do the opposite. This man’s muscles at the back of the calf (gastrocnemius) is contracting. To make it stop, flex your foot upwards using the opposite muscle (tibialis anterior). This forces the contracting muscle to relax.
W
I’ve jumped out of bed in the middle of the night more than once because of Charlie horses. I’d be dead asleep then wake up from the cramp and jump out of bed to put all of my weight on trying to get the muscle to relax. 🤣
P
Yep, that also happened to me before multiple times. Pulling my toes towards me is what makes it go away after a while.
P
I feel you on this. Nothing gets you out of bed faster than a Charley horse. I also got one in my right calf while I was driving on the expressway (with nowhere to get off the road). I was in tears by the time I was able to get out and stretch it out.
A
I am 40 years old and I have never heard the term Charlie horse used for a cramp before. You really do learn something new every day. Well, maybe not every day, but at least once in a while!

My husband would make me stand up and try to walk around. Hated him for it at the time but it worked. I had them so bad when I was Prego the longest was about 15 minutes and left me with a very strained calf muscle. I couldn’t put weight on it for about a week
T
The trick that works for me is to force myself to relax the muscles in the legs. Basically just put all my focus in releasing all tension in the leg. If I feel the leg cramp happening and I do this fast enough I can stop it before it gets really tight even.
M
yeah pretty much works the same, even if I want so bad to bend the knee and massage myself it gets better faster if i just relax and extend the leg. the only inconvenience it is always at 3am with muffled screaming with a pillow in my face not to wake up anyone
I
I thought that’s common knowledge?
P
Maybe, maybe not. I didn’t need to know it until I got old, since that’s when my muscles didn’t do what I told them. If I go out on a long hike, the combination of dehydration, fatigue, and a cat pinning my legs will have me launching out of bed and trying not to scream that night.
