I finally worked up the courage to ask my boss for a raise, after months of planning what to say. Just as I began to speak, the fire alarm went off, and everyone evacuated the building. I stood there awkwardly with my script in hand, while my raise went up in smoke, along with my confidence. Guess I’ll try again—eventually.
