During the thrilling 500m shorttrack event at the Winter Olympics, two skaters were neck and neck, displaying athletic prowess that could make a cheetah jealous. As they approached the finish line, they looked like they were auditioning for a dramatic soap opera about rival siblings, leaning forward with all the intensity of a last-minute grade on a final exam. The crowds roared, and a collective gasp filled the arena as they crossed the line almost simultaneously—until a replay revealed that the winner was decided by the tiniest margin: a millimeter.
In the aftermath, the losing skater dramatically flopped onto the ice, throwing their arms up like a child denied a cookie, while the winner did a celebratory spin—only to immediately slip and land flat on their back. The irony of ending the race where they both started—a tangle of limbs and ice—made everyone laugh, proving that even in the most intense competitions, a well-timed pratfall can steal the show. As for the official photo finish, let’s just say it looked more like a headless chicken race than a record-breaking Olympic moment!

Winter Olympics: Photo finish in 500m short track event

B
Is it normal for people to finish backwards in the Olympics? This is the 2nd one I’ve seen this year and can’t recall ever seeing even 1 in previous games.
R
Second time by the same skater. First time a show off, this time caused by a crash. I’ve never seen it before
J
The other one I saw was a skier.
S
Yeah, the mogal skier was wild as well!
Y
Has to be mentioned that the skiier ended up backwards after a fat backflip too which is even more insane haha
P
I don’t believe the the mogul was intentional, considering he wiped out on the landing and momentum carried him into a switch position. Would have slowed him down to flip back which could have cost the win.
D
He was like a ragdoll flipping over that ramp
R
Kind of the ice skating version of what I call the “NASCAR finish”, that is sliding across the infield, upside down and on fire.
N
POV: You remembered you left the stove on mid-sprint
D
It’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.
M
Ice skates on ice? Chance in a million.
S
Its the wrong type of ice
G
Omg lol. I’ve been having comedy posts show up lately and you reminded me of this awesome one. Thank you, I hadn’t realized it had sunk in so deeply that I’m still laughing about it on some level! https://www.reddit.com/r/StandUpComedy/s/gBAh7mTlUY
L
Buddy this is so good thank you .
P
🤣 that was really good!
S
These two dudes got *reeeally* lucky showing up with skates on
S
Theyre in the wrong environment, they should be outside of the environment.
N
no cardboard derivatives
D
If there is just one thing I love about Reddit it’s a Redditors ability to shoehorn that reference into almost anything! 😂
X
well how is it untypical?
S
The front doesnt usually come last.
D
The rear has been towed outside the environment.
S
Yes, but presumably into another environment
D
No, it’s _beyond_ the environment.
L
But… What’s out there?
D
There’s nothing out there. All there is is sea, birds, and fish. And the rear that fell off.
O
And 20,000 tonnes of crude oil
M
Defeat normally come before detail.
R
Oh shut upppp 😂😂😂
S
The front doesn’t usually fall off.
D
What if you towed this ice skater outside the environment?
C
did the front fall off?
I
There was a skier who finished backwards too after recovering from a semi-crash
W
*If I had a nickel for every time someone finished backwards at these Olympics, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.*
B
*unexpected doofenschmirtz
B
Happens all the time in rowing and backstroke
T
We must go to the bottom of this
J
He did it on purpose once because he’s a dick, this one was because of a crash.
W
You could argue that he was better prepared for this situation by practicing it the first time round. It paid off.
R
It’d be slippery like that some times
C
How did he end up like that
G
Some people crashed behind him, and flicked his skate so he made a backwards manouvre.
T
When in doubt, disco time?
O
rofl
F
Disco Stu finishs cool.
I
go butt out
D
Words to live by.
B
This happens to me in Rocket League all the time. Sometimes you just gotta adapt and make the best of a bad situation.
H
It happens to me all the time too in Counter-Strike 2
B
I thought the 500m was only a 2 man event?
