Last winter, my dog Max discovered snow for the first time. He bounded outside, skidded across the yard, and then launched himself into a snowdrift like a furry cannonball. Instead of just running around, he buried his face in the snow, snorting and sneezing like he was trying to unearth buried treasure. After a good while of this, he finally stood up, completely white from head to tail, and proudly trotted back to me, looking like a snowman that had come to life.
As I laughed and reached for my phone to capture the moment, Max decided that a snowball fight was on. He pounced on a fresh snowball I had just thrown and promptly rolled over, flinging snow everywhere. In that instant, I realized my dog was having a better time than I ever could, and it hit me: he wasn’t just enjoying the snow—he was convinced it was a new best friend, and he was determined to win it over with every playful leap and joyful bark!

I used to spend time at my cousin’s in a rural area. If it had snowed and I went to walk the dogs, the tall, skinny one didn’t even want to go out. The big, heavy one would do basically exactly this.

Seems like normal behavior for the whippet and chow sides. I don’t have ideas on pit bull or lab tendencies. Maybe try a dog coat for the pit whippet bull since they were born “naked”.

Normal for Labs is normal. Whippets are hyperactive, not that able to understand people, but friendly. Normal for Chow’s is usually OK, but sometimes they’ll nip at you if they want food or a walk, and they’re not cuddly. Normal for full Pit’s is don’t put them around small children, and don’t piss them off. But the last I think has to do with most full Pit’s having been bred as guard dogs for a long time. Pebbles loved to play-fight (totally pulled her bites if she got you), but she was death on small animals (not the second family cat who she trained, cleaned, and took care of), from rats to raccoons. But she also loved to jump up and cuddle, which was a little difficult when she was 65 pounds and you’re just trying to smoke a bowl and watch TV…

I always wonder about birds and squirrels when it snows. Their “undercarriage” must be REALLY cold. For context, I do live in a southern state, so it doesn’t snow often and therefore most of our birds don’t migrate.

Could be a language thing. In my country we absolutely love our pets. We don’t have much homeless pets, like strays are really not a thing, haven’t been for decades. And we call animals “it”. There’s nothing disrespectful in that, just a way of speaking. It would be little bit strange to talk about animals using he/she type of pronouns in my language.

I am french and in our language it would be considered as super inhumane and very bad to call a dog “ça” (equivalent of it), we treat animals like living beings not objects, even the ones we eat. Why the hell does English do this ?

English doesn’t really do this usually. While technically not incorrect, it sounds unnatural and heartless. Most people refer to their pets as he or she and not it, which is why there are many commenters here pointing out that it was weird to call the dog “it”.

In french even a table has a gender, and that doesn’t make our treatment of her more humane? We lean on her, cut on and into her, draw on her, bang on her with a fist, etc. Why should calling something it be worse than calling her iel or xe? If zey like it, isn’t xe ok?

Yes in french we don’t have a pronoun for objects, but if a language has one (or more doesn’t matter) for living beings, and one for not living beings, why would you use the second one on animals if not to treat them as lower than you ? It’s not that you are going against the animal’s preferences or some other human concepts that sounds wrong to me, it’s the fact that it’s subtle message means “this dog is my object” that is wrong.

Applying French standards to another language seems needlessly seeking problems. French eliminated the latin neutral. That’s suspiciously “sexist”, forcing sex on any noun). Your moon is feminine, German moons are masculine. Neutral gender is not for objects only. And tho many dog owners might prefer their dog to me, to a lot of others, dogs are indeed below people. That is separate from whether we own them which you also object to, but which is legally the case. But this has nothing to do with the use of neutral. Cattle, a sheep is gender neutral because it can be either. A bitch or a cow or a mare is a she, a station, bull a dog, is technically a he. But still English usage used to be “it” . I agree with you it kind of shows an estimate of lower intelligence. But that doesn’t mean no love. Nowadays we can use they, xe, ze, ve, to avoid gendering people, so apparently some people don’t feel that gender is that important. As long as the dog is happy like this one, and well treated why be upset?

You say that we legally own dogs, maybe that’s true in your country, but not in France where animals have special juridical statuses amd are legally considered as “sensible beings” and explicitly not “objects”. They can be adopted, not owned, even though you can say it’s “my dog” like you say it’s “my child”, in fact they are legally closer to the child status than the object, at least for company animals (not cattle which has another specific status).
