Last summer, my friend Sarah and I decided to hit the beach, but when we arrived, we found out we’d forgotten to pack water. With the sun blazing, we made a beeline for the nearest snack shack. After scanning the menu as if we were deciphering ancient hieroglyphics, we realized the only thing they had was overpriced coconut water. Sarah took a sip and made a face like she’d just bitten into a lemon, declaring she was “thirsting” for good ole’ tap water. I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity—of all things to hate, she was hating on coconut water while simultaneously thirsting for a drink as basic as our friendship.
There’s something hilariously ironic about complaining about the one item in front of you that could quench your thirst, especially when you’ve been parched and resentful about the sun’s relentless heat. It was as if she was in a love-hate relationship with coconut water—each sip filled with disdain, while her eyes subtly begged for a refreshing glass of H2O. Who knew thirst could turn even the most chill beach day into a dramatic showdown between salty waves and salty attitudes?
