I’ve seen the movie who knows how many times, and I hadn’t made the connection before between the earlier mention of the type of “pipe dreams”, and how Andy escaped. Very nice.

The term ‘pipe dream’ is actually a reference to opium hallucinations and has been in use since the late 1800s. I think Andy’s method of escape and mention of pipe dreams are coincidental.

I didn’t know the origin of the expression, thanks. But them being “sh***y pipe dreams”, and how he gets out, now feels a bit more than just coincidental, to me. There’s definitely other ways they could have phrased the earlier remark, but this was chosen. Maybe it’s giving “too much credit”, but looking at the movie as a whole, that particular wording certainly seems fitting.
