massive sinkhole engulfs street in Bangkok

Massive sinkhole engulfs a street in Bangkok.

N
What’s with the fools standing right at the edge of the expanding hole?
R
See them holding their phones?
E
_”I saw that video. You dabbed on your way down”_ Kid that fall into the Grand Canyon: _”Yeah, that’s how you get the likes”_ Upload, season 1
S
I wish they had that kid in it more
F
This is how we know it isn’t AI
T
They’re the ones looking for a close up with the bison at Yellowstone
M
If there were a modern art piece depicting something catastrophic happening and rather than helping or leaving people were standing around filming, I’d totally get it.
B
Like someone else said up higher, it’s one of the fear responses: fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or film
C
Making sure they get enough content to post on Reddit!
L
risking it all for that sweet sweet imaginary internet points
E
they are wearing helmets, all good.
T
Standing? Some of them are walking towards it to get a better look 😮
T
If the disaster is visible around your thumb then holding it out at arms length you’re too close…
A
People are so clueless. As soon as that ground started to give way I’d be OUT of there. 🤯
S
But then you’d miss out on that awesome sewage waterfall!
F
I think you mean waterslide.
I
Gotta wheeze the ju-uice
M
No! No “wheeze the juice”! No “but chill”!
G
Butt chill in this context
–
I understood this reference.
F
*Sewerslide
A
I want a ride! Where does it all end up?
S
You get sucked into the aquifer never to be seen again.
G
Suislide
S
At first you might be able to give them the benefit of the doubt, but even that’s a stretch. Once the next section dropped and people were still standing at the edge, they were asking for death. Might as well just jump in at that point and save time.
C
That’s what I’m saying. Like when that next huge chunk broke off and slipped in, everyone of them should have reflected and thought ‘wow, if that happened on our side, i’d be in there right now…perhaps I should get away from this’ but none of them did! Some got closer, to record down into it possibly. Social media is a blight.
S
While standing right next to a building basically on the edge of the pit as well. Zero thought, only record.
I
I wouldn’t even feel safe from the camera man’s position.
M
Judging by how he bolted at the end of the video, neither did the camera man lol
T
The building next door was starting to go down.
Y
And yet, that car to the right was still lying impervious at the edge of the sinkhole after the first colapse. I was totally expecting it to fall down.
G
Looked like it would go down as well, but here is another video father along and its still there at the 17 sec mark lmao [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3Y4iMFG9Rc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3Y4iMFG9Rc)

B
That is fucking shameless and very funny lmao
T
was the light pole next to the building, not the building itself. maybe it eventually fell too but not in this vid
X
Buildings are heavy, so heavy that they might shift the ground they are built upon. To avoid that giant rods are inserted into the earth down to bed rock, so that the building’s weight rest upon unmovable ground rather than dirt. It would take a lot for those buildings to crumble, or a Chinese construction company.
S
There’s a shot from another angle afterwards, the building that looked like it might go down is basically just standing on metal stilts after (those metal rods you’re referring to) with *all* the soil washed away around them. Good thing! https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/massive-sinkhole-in-bangkok-street-forces-evacuations/article70088494.ece/amp/
A
Oh, this is TODAY. Usually these are older. Thanks for the link!
J
Those are friction pilings. They don;t hit bedrock but rely on the compressive strength of the soil they are driven into. Each piling is driven through the top cap to a specified depth and then the top cap is bonded to the pilings with grout or epoxy systems. You can see the exposed bottoms. Nasty situation.
D
They don’t always go to bedrock. I wouldn’t trust that it’s properly done, even in the US. [(see Millennium Tower)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Tower_(San_Francisco))
J
The construction company usually crumbles first
P
In the words of King Arthur: “RUN AWAY!, RUN AWAY!”
C
oh shit! talk about gifs that end too soon, the rest of the streets start go at the end too.
Z
I love the car sitting there for a bit in the beginning, hoping it clears up and he can get on with his day.
R
Sacrificing sure footing to watch a hole double in size is not what Ra’s al Ghul died for.
K
Dry sand has a slope of about 35 degree… If the hole was 10 meter deep dug in dry sand, you could be 25 meter and not safe. Thankfully, its neither dry, nor is it 100% sand, which make a lot more stable, but why the fuck would you even tests your luck on that. Should be at the very least twice as far as the depth of the hole.
F
This hole is growing. The slope doesn’t matter when there’s an empty cavity underneath.
K
And when you’ve no idea how big that cavity even is
A
hmmm… I should call her.
