I don’t like to generalize, but honestly, a girl’s equestrian interests is one of my biggest red flags.

I dated one. Your red flag is valid haha

Means she has money tho, horses aren’t cheap

X

Means her parents have money, and she’s probably spoiled

There’s a joke that runs along the lines of “never date a horse girl, you’ll always be third in line behind her horse and her parents’ money.”

C

You mean *our* parents.

S
SonicFlash01 • 170 points
If they’re your parents too then you probably shouldn’t date her

Yeah and spoiled girls are dangerous

N
Neohexane • 12 points
No, it means she never has money, because she spends it all on the horse.

Really depends on the horse, you can often get loaners for free or half decent intermediates for under a grand, pasture can be less than 100 a month depending on where you are, stabled thoroughbreds are another story, but something ring ready and pastured can be done on a relatively low income.

I mean, you still have to feed it and keep it healthy though?

Yeah I’d imagine vet bills for a horse dwarf the vet bill for a cat or a dog?

I have a friend (luckily not Girlfriend) who’s into Horses and its crazy what she spends on her horse. It cost her 17k€ to buy add to that the stable costs, veterinarian, food and she has to still work around the stable a lot. The time and money she invests for the little riding she does is crazy, I spend less time and money on all my Hobbies (Gaming, Cars, Motorcycles and Firefighting) combined than she spends on that horse. We‘re both in our early to mid twenties and I‘m still studying while she‘s in an apprenticeship and doesn’t make a lot of money, her parents help her out a lot in financing that hobby… The only hobby I have that could come close to hers is being into cars but even then I don’t think I could even spend as much time wrenching on my car as she has to in order to keep her 17k€ investment alive…

Them horse girls are freaks. If you ever date one buckle up. You won’t be bored.

Having been around them all my life, yes. The stereotype is pretty much on the money. When it comes to horse girls (horse people really), you don’t so much look for crazy vs sane, it’s more like you choose your flavor of crazy.

What I found interesting was how many people who do it as basically indentured servants. Absurdly long hours of work and risk which is often ‘paid’ in the form of tacking services and horse usage. I get both parties are cool with it but as someone without that sort of passion it seems exploitative.

Yeah, this was me. People think of horse riding as a rich person’s hobby – and it is, but it’s also a poor exploited teenager’s hobby 😅 As a 13-year-old, I worked 10-hour shifts of physical labour, shovelling shit and carrying heavy loads in the cold and rain, and got paid with one 1-hour riding lesson a week. Total exploitation, but my family had no money so it was my only access to horse riding. Besides, I was so happy to be there that I would’ve paid to do it if I could!

Are you still a horse lady ?

B

Same here. I loved working with them aside from the most extreme temperatures. Caring for them creates a wonderful bond.

I rode from about 11 to 16 and I put in a lot of hard labor for the “privilege”.

Oh for sure! And in the US, employers can (and almost always do) use their status as ‘agriculture’ to take advantage of payment loopholes. I used to get paid $7.00 an hour long after the $11 and $15 minimum wage increases in my state. After I moved to a new barn, I took a full-time job outside the equine industry, and was still struggling (my horse developed some medical conditions that required very expensive medication) so I took on a part-time “working student” position at the barn to offset costs. The pay was $15 per *shift*. Each shift could be anywhere between 1-4 hours long (sometimes longer if there was a show or event). Up until my horse finally passed, I was working 7 days a week and still barely scraping by. The only barn I ever worked for that paid a decent wage was being managed by a psychopath who terrorized the staff, abused the horses, and stole the horse’s muscle relaxers to use herself. Quit mid-shift one day when she tried to get me kicked by one of the horses.

When they do it they’re hot. But when I take my dog, wiggle him in the air, stick a thermometer up his butt with my mouth while holding him upside down and post it on the internet somehow I’m a monster. That’s not fair

What do you think?
