Cormorant takes on more than it can handle, perishes while attempting to ingest walleye.
in WTF
Cormorant overreaches and loses its life attempting to swallow a walleye.

B
Died doing what he loved.
S
As a Michigander I’d also love to die eating walleye.
C
Throating big schmeat
C
I should call her…
U
…being alive.
W
Pelican somewhere laughing at his dumb ass.
E
Pelican’t
T
One can’t, but maybe Toucan
J
An interesting bird, the pelican. Its beak can hold more than its belly can.
P
He can hold in his beak enough food for a week, and I’m damned if I know how the hell he can!
N
Pretty sure pelicans also regularly choke themselves to death on things. They just put literally anything in their mouths
S
Joe Pudney was out fishing last week when he came across the aftermath of a battle between two of Oneida Lake’s most voracious predators. Bobbing on the surface was a double-crested cormorant with the tail end of a large walleye sticking half way out its mouth. Both bird and fish were dead. We’ll never know which critter died first, but clearly the cormorant bit off more than it could chew—or in this case, gulp. And cormorants, with their long necks and hooked beaks, are great gulpers of fish, consuming up to 1.5 pounds per day, including the occasional adult walleye. “We do find legal-size or larger walleyes in their stomachs sometimes,” said Thomas Brooking, research specialist at Cornell University’s Biological Field Station at Shackelton Point. “It’s not common,” he added. “But we have found 15- or 16-inch walleye that they have swallowed successfully.” \>> [Read more](https://www.newyorkupstate.com/outdoors/2025/09/photo-captures-fatal-encounter-between-two-of-oneida-lakes-top-predators.html)

My local news outlet posting on this sub is the most WTF part of this post Tf are you doing here syr.com
S
Everybody loves the circus.
T
TBF, it’s good content
T
Damn birds are a problem at some of my preferred fishing holes. But nature does nature. Ill just bitch and moan while appreciating they are just more apt at catching fish than me.
W
Millions of years of evolution vs a monkey with a fishing pole.
J
You should team up!
W
Well, get a cormorant and use it for fishing. Still practised in some communities. They put a ring around its neck to prevent it from eating your fish and then give a few as a treat.
T
TIL the Pokemon Cramorant is based off the real bird cormorant
R
My dumbass read the post title as “Cramorant”
O
I thought i was reading a post from a pokemon sub..
D
Walleyes were bigger than its stomach.

Birds don’t chew anyway
E
everything reminds me of her
K
You too can have a childhood-scarring memory of these birds by troll fishing in their hunting waters and watching one dive into the water, swallow your tri-hook lure, and making your father have to euthanize it with a pocket knife on a dinghy.
[
See you were doing it wrong. You should have caught the bird, and used it as a lure. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cormorant_fishing
S
My dumb, fat ass at a Brazilian steakhouse.
P
These birds eat all the stocked trout every spring before any fishermen can get ‘em.
K
I should call her
B
Should have used his ability Gulp Missile
S
I should call her…

I
Rip cramorant you were always a funny pokemon
C
Man, cormorants are so cool. Those long necks, hooked beaks, their almost reptilian look, the way their spread their wings… it has some sort of primeval feel to it. Especially contrasted to the urban environments where you can find them. This one is an idiot though.
I
Well, you can look at it as now you have fish for dinner tonight. Tomorrow, you have a fresh bird to bake. Or, just get baked and laugh at the sitch.
G
I’ve never heard of anyone eating cormorant but you do you I guess buddy.
I
It says on goog that, yes, you can eat cormorant.they are generally considered “not good to eat” due to the fishy taste and potentially tough, oily meat, thats because of their diet. Honestly, kind of like yard buzzard, some ppl dont like chicken or stuff like liver and gizzaeds frog legs. It doesn’t mean they couldn’t be food. Lol. I was just making a positive out of a negative sitch. If I was in an area where they were plentiful in numbers. If I was homeless and w out food, I would most definitely be the guy on the beach. Throwing stuff at them as to knock one dingy, then grab it and have me a different kinda fish meat. Lol. (When you are hungry, you will eat. Js, if you’ve ever been w out a home and out w no food. I’ve scraped up .54 cents at a truck stop parking lot. Just to go in the store and buy a can of alpo. No, joke. Being 100% honest. Took my knife out, cut it open, and used my fingers to get it all out. Off the concrete that was in front of me. I ate.)
T
This seems like a lesson for ME. 🤔
M
Walleye dorsals are really sharp and pointy. That bird might as well have tried to swallow a harpoon.
S
Cormorant learned that dorsal fin only goes one way.
D
And the fisherman gets two meals.
G
There has gotta be a metaphor here…
J
That’s how I look trying to swallow vitamins …
C
I love birds, but those birds are a menace and invasive. They are shoot on site in many places.
[
I should call her…
F

D
It’s weird he choked, I thought these birds have a separate tube for breathing.
