A pleasant collection of faces

Fly tying. Hare’s ear is a common ingredient in fishing flies, for example.

Came here to explain this BUT there’s a fix face in there. I don’t know anyone tying flies with fox fur.

Pretty sure you can tie flies out of just about anything if you’re dedicated enough. I actually still have a red fox squirrel pelt I shot in the 90s in my kit. And several birds people gave me that are… uh… not okay to have.

I’ve tied a fly out a clump of fur I picked off my dog lol. Dry flies like that are different though…you shouldn’t tie a fly that’s supposed to float on the surface with something that soaks up water….and vice a versa, wet flies with materials that want to float.

Pack it with floatant I guess.

I always wanted to learn to tie flys not to make actal lures but to just make little semi-realsitic artificial insects. Wheres a good place to start?

r/flytying will give you all you need – there are infinite varieties. One thing to note is that fly fishing is a very ‘traditional’ hobby to many (not all), and you can be easily lured into the trap of spending hundreds if not thousands on tools and materials. My advice is to buy only what you need to begin tying one or two patterns then gradually buy more materials as required. Avoid ‘starter kits’ which often come with lots of sub-par tying materials you’ll likely never use. There are a huge variety of flies but they can be largely divided into categories; dry flies (which float on the surface) and wet flies (which sink or float just subsurface) then a key subset of wet flies are nymphs, which are commonly weighted with a bead or heavy wire to sink quickly. They all mimic different insects but more importantly different life cycles of those insects, so you will often find flies which may bear the same name, but look very different. For examples, look up mayfly nymphs, duns and spinners, all which have different characteristics to target feeding fish at different stages of the mayflies life.

> And several birds people gave me that are… uh… not okay to have. That reminds me of an episode of the “This American Life” podcast about a young man who broke in to the British Museum of Natural History to steal some rare birds. The transcript is here, but I recommend listening to the audio if you are interested: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/654/transcript.

Can confirm. I worked for a guy as a teenager. His company was called Fish Hunter. He sold fly tying materials. I have packaged so many faces, fura, feathers ect. Most people would be surprised by the different parts of the animals that are used and the amazing color dyes.

I’ve gotten a couple of these at a swap meet before. Neat (if a little gruesome) [here’s a photo](https://imgur.com/a/meAnQct) of my dog wearing it like a cowl. EDIT: Looking online, looks like you can get them pretty cheap. Just search for “fox faces” on Etsy and the like.

The costumer in me got way too excited about these… So much potential. Be a shame to let them go to waste

Seen stuff like this on Etsy before, like, ‘off cuts’ from something fur was used to make. Tails and faces or just scrappy bits.

In highschool, 20+ years ago, I’d go to a local feed store and buy rabbit leather. Made dice bags for myself and some friends. Still use that dice bag to this very day.

Six dollars for a face?! That’s a steal, I’ve been having to get my own for years and it’s a hassle.
