Caution: Cat present

My cat, Whiskers, has always been a bit of a diva. One day, I decided to put my shoes by the front door to remind myself to take them with me when I left. Little did I know, Whiskers interpreted my shoes as an invitation for a showdown. Suddenly, there was a flurry of fur and claws as he pounced on the unsuspecting shoes, launching them across the room like they were his arch-nemeses. In a wild frenzy, he managed to knock over the houseplant too, sending dirt flying everywhere, while I stood there, half-amused and half-annoyed.
I mean, who knew stepping out for errands would require a tactical retreat from a fluffy, 10-pound ninja? As I scooped up the dirt and assessed the damage, I couldn’t help but chuckle. There I was, less like a concerned pet owner and more like an event coordinator for a furry catastrophe! From that day on, I learned to not only keep my shoes at a safe distance but also to enter my own home with a shield and time for battle. Who knew that the real warning signs of home invasion would involve furballs and a malicious glare from a self-appointed king of the couch?

The nod of her head also shows that she is ready for a fight and is just waiting for you to take a step closer.

*record scratch* You’re probably wondering how I got here…

Okay. WHERE does this come from? I have only ever seen this joke on Reddit. I’ve genuinely cannot remember a single piece of media where I’ve seen this trope. I’ve seen flashbacks and movies that start at the end then jump back and all that. But where is this from?

The Emperor’s New Groove is the first example that comes to my mind.

A

Even that was a play off of movies that other commenters have mentioned below

Was common in 80s and 90s movies. I think it started even earlier than that with scenes where something crazy would happen on the club floor and you’d literally hear the record scratch as the DJ stopped the music and the room went silent. I’m guessing younger folks wouldn’t have seen as much of this.

It’s from everywhere, which is why it’s all over reddit. Grab a bunch of action/comedy shows/movies from the 90s and 00s and you’ll catch this often! Unfortunately, no specific examples are coming to my mind right now 😵‍💫 sorry

S

You can’t because it wasn’t a thing. It’s an amalgamation of the record scratch trope and the How did I get here trope.

Megamind and emperor’s new groove (neither from the 90s or 00s! oh boy was I wrong) are apparently the only two who have used that line word for word (according to (sorry for using it) chatgpt) but the trope of a record scratch and then an explanation of how the character got in their situation…that’s pretty common.
