I have veneers and they are a frickin nightmare! I’m on my fourth set.

My theory is it’s because you can imagine it happening to you. You can’t as easily imagine having a limb exploded off. I dissected cadavers for a time, and could happily remove organs and flay open armpits and things like that. But what made me feel queasy was the little wire toe tag that pierced through the big toe, nail bone and all. Something small but imaginable.

Speak for yourself, i can very easily imagine having a limb exploded off. However, that might just be from a bit of personal experience with explosives and a hand and now i have 9 and 1/3 fingers and only one aposable thumb. But also a very vivid imagination, so maybe just that.
