Aberdeen, Scotland reports 20 consecutive days without sunshine.

**What Happened:** In Aberdeen, Scotland, the locals decided to take matters into their own hands after enduring 20 consecutive days without a glimpse of sunlight. Inspired by desperate measures, the city council organized a “Sunshine Festival,” complete with sun-themed parades, face painting, and even a giant inflatable sun that looked suspiciously like a beach ball with a smile. As bright as it was, the inflatables did little to shield the town from the lingering gloom—especially when a sudden rainstorm rolled in and turned the festival into a waterlogged slip ‘n slide party.

**Why It’s Funny:** The sight of Aberdonians slipping and sliding about, wearing sun hats and sunglasses, while desperately trying to enjoy warm beverages under umbrellas was a hilarious contradiction. Social media exploded with posts of townsfolk attempting to catch raindrops with their cups while dressed like they were heading to an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean. If there’s one thing Aberdeen proved, it’s that when life gives you gray clouds, you might as well make a summer festival out of them—even if you end up drenched in what feels like the Atlantic Ocean.

This was 3 days ago and it’s still missing. Keep taking those vitamin D supplements!

Scotland just discovered the sun and immediately put out a missing persons report.

The first winter I moved to Seattle, end of ’98, there were a record breaking number of days without sun. 111 or something like that? I was like, a month in, I’m walking to class and it was just “misting” outside and I remember thinking, “Oh, so this is why everyone in this city is on drugs.”

I moved from Miami to Bellingham. That’s when I learned that Bellingham got typically 50 days of sun a year. No wonder the locals were saying they don’t tan, they mold and why all the parks where littered with people sunbathing when the slightest sliver of sun poked out. LOL

woof. That’s a rough adjustment. I was coming from Chicago so it wasn’t nearly as bad. I exchanged cold for damp mist.

The culture shift was harder to deal with than the weather.

Hahah. One of my older, stoner cousins lives in Bellingham. I understand.

In both Vancouver BC and Seattle, all winter everyone is in the pub. Then, as soon as there is a relatively sunny day the parks are fucking full and everybody’s doing tai chi in them.

lol that’s not true at all. It’s over 150 sunny days per year. The winters on the west coast are super cloudy, but from May – October there’s barely any clouds at all

I was going to say, as someone from Portland, 20 days is no big deal. It used easily go from Mid November to the end of February without a sunny day. This year has me spooked though. Our sunless days are going to come this summer b/c of all the fires if we don’t get more snowpack.

You have stated the hi risk time for Cyclones in Northern Australia, spot on.

Thankfully we don’t get anything even remotely close to a cyclone, or the heat and humidity, y’all get down there.

K

There is a Cyclone finishing off its deeds now in the North West of WA. Which means possible heavy flooding rain which will eventually end up on the East Coast as Showers. Cheers

The difference between what we get as a cyclone and what they get is 100 kmh or more in windspeed and a storm surge that can be measured in meters instead of an inch or two. Technically they’re the same thing, in the sense that a bichon frise and a cane corso are both dogs.

Poor Portland, no sunny days during the months the rest of the North is buried under feet of snow. 🤣

How’s Oregon’s handling of wildfires these days? Here in California we’re always on fire and I keep thinking of how the Pacific Northwest historically didn’t have as much of a problem with them until the fairly recent past. Hope it’s not bad this year. British Columbia getting slammed with them made me really sad as well.

We’ve been lucky the last couple years. They haven’t been great but we haven’t had anything nearly as bad as 5 years ago. But this year snowpack is about half of what it should be.

Fucking NEWFOUNDLAND with a million fires??? Wtf. I mean, coastal BC is *damp*, and, like Seattle or Bellingham has a maritime climate, but NEWFOUNDLAND holy mother of God.

>number of days without sun. 111 or something like that? That is at least 90% of the reason I want to move from Texas to PNW. Pretty sure we’ve had a longer stretch with zero clouds visible.

T

Well, I’ll warn you now, Seattle is very “cliquey”. I’m pretty outgoing, make friends easily and it still took about a year for me to find my people.

B

Oh, no, not Seattle itself. CoL is nuuuuuts and I don’t like people. I just want clouds and darkness.

I follow this guy from Poland on Instagram who is always posting awesome moody street photography where the laneways are all gloomy and misty. Being in Australia, I’m wondering how he always gets the right weather conditions to take them? Are they real or just AI? Looking through these comments, yeah nah, they are probably real.

People in Seattle aren’t really suicidal. Its just that all the gray gets to you. Cutting our wrists is the only way to see color.

We also had something like 92 out of 95 days with rain that year.

I absolutely love the Scottish summertime, it’s the best day of the year.
