An unusual incident occurred when a cat attempted to obtain additional food while the household was away for the night.
in WTF
Bizarre mishap occurs as our cat seeks extra food during our overnight absence.

L
I’ve heard the recommendation from some cat owners to get those childproof oven dial covers to prevent situations like this. Might be a good idea!
I
Thank you!
I
You are going to be fighting that smell for a while. Window fans and air fresheners are your friends.
F
And those ozone sprays. Don’t use too much though or you will cook your lungs.
G
This is a good idea, thanks.
F
We take all the dials off and out them in the drawer right next to the stove lol
D
I thought you were going to say they should replace the cat for a child lol
S
Our oven has a lockout you can activate by holding down a couple buttons for a few seconds. I always wondered why it would be necessary besides kids, now I see!
D
Or just flip the breaker off
B
Good lord… open all the windows and put fans right in front of the window with the air directed outside. Clean the kitchen very well. Hope the cat is okay!
I
Cat is fine, we’re still taking him to the vet tomorrow. It’s winter in Kansas right now so we can’t have the windows open but thankfully my bf was too lazy to take down the window ac units we use in the summer so we’ve got all of those on the fan setting right now.
G
Window AC units don’t usually exchange air with the outside. That would be really inefficient from a energy use standpoint. You might just be circulating air.
E
Yea they usually just have some tiny “fresh air” vent you can open. With the size those vents usually are, I can’t imagine it resulting in more than maybe 5 maybe 10% air from outside.
B
Winter or not you gotta get that air out!
R
Those aren’t going to do anything. They are just recirculating the air in your place. They don’t dump the air outside. You need air filters.
B
So your cat was trying to fry up some kibble. If that’s a crime, then lock me up.
A
What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent fried kibble meal?
S
Smoked salmon if you please
I
😂😂
E
A succulent kibble meal
J
Lock ‘em up!!
C
You may want to get things checked out for smoke damage as well as a checkup for the cat possibly.
I
Yupp, cat is going to the vet tomorrow. What smoke damage do you think there could be?
Z
It depense on how much material was burt. You will have soot and other damaging particles throughout your whole house and it will probably become a bigger issue if you dont have a professional in to asses any damages sooner rather than later.
Z
I’d maybe phone the fire department and ask them if you should be concerned about the smoke/particulate matter. Maybe they could recommend the best procedure. Perhaps a clean and airing out the house will suffice, perhaps not. Better let the pros know.
W
It seems like I’m always reminding my wife to keep flammable things away from our oven. The reason being is that things like this happen.
I
In the future, nothing flammable will be kept next to the oven, trust me😂
D
Tell your cat to use a little oil next time. It’ll sear the kibble much better.
T
If the kibble is cut really thin, it’ll liquify in the pan right away.
J
Is the cat’s name Paulie?
R
I have zero advice for the house or smell but I bet that cast iron pan is a-okay.
U
Open the windows and keep the air moving. Gotta get the particulates out.
S
Our cat also started a fire jumping on the stove so we started talking the knobs off when we weren’t using them and keeping them in a small dish on the back of the stove. No fires since then.
L
Well that’s terrifying. Time and ventilation are going to be your best friends at getting rid of the smell. A cross breeze and a fan or two. Breathing burnt plastic isn’t fantastic but I don’t know about long term effects.
Z
We bought child protective covers for our oven because of our cats.
I
I am definitely looking into these now
J
Best to remove the dials and only put them on to use the oven. I had to do this after my cat basically did the same thing. She almost burnt herself up jumping up there one day. The peace of mind was worth it to me IMO.
K
could look into renting or buying an ozone generator, just look into how to safely operate one.
R
I know people use ozone generators to get rid of smells in cars, so that’s a direction you can look in. I have no idea of the safety of using one in a living space, or how long you can safely use one, so do your own research on that front. I imagine you don’t want to be there while its working, and you want to ventilate well after its done.
S
I’ve watched final destination, I’d suggest watching your back. Cat knows you avoided death sometime and it will be back to finish the job.
E
That would have really made me paws and think
G
My only thought for the smell is either air the place out by opening windows and turning on fans, or get an air purifier.
M
IANAD but for sure there are some effects lingering from the smoke residuals and plastic being burnt like that especially if it was burning and smoking in your home for a long time would probably be beneficial for you to see a vet like your cat, but for humans
T
Ventilate really well, and stay away until it’s been airing out for a few hours. Plastic fumes are noxious and will mess you up. Recommend using fans and opening up all windows. The smell will hang around for a while but should go away if you wipe and mop all surfaces in the kitchen and immediate areas. Ask me how I know
I
How😂
A
I think you’re going to need an ozone generator. Follow the instructions very closely
D
This sounds like those situations that are almost impossible but it still somehow happened.
F
All this and no fat ass cat tax?
D
This should be cross posted in r/cats with a photo of the offender
C
After airing the house out close windows / doors and run an ozone generator for as long as you can. Leave the house while it’s running. You can get them on Amazon
