Probably a compressor failure/stall and flameout or a bird strike. Not really a design flaw or manufacturing issue. That can happen on any turbine engine and would be more related to maintenance issues or just happenstance. It’s actually relatively common if you spend any time listening to the liveATC-type channels on Youtube. I’d guess it’s one of the more common reasons for flights taking off to need to return to the airfield.

Going on vacation soon and for some reason the internet keeps putting airplane malfunctions and crashes my way lol. Looking at the site kind of is calming because there’s like max 10 accidents on a day with usually 0 fatailities. Compare that to car accidents per day.. Still gonna knock on some wood though.

I’ve seen probably every video in airplane crashes there is and I don’t have any fear flying because of it, not despite it, to be honest. You start to realize how much has to go wrong separately at the same time to result in an accident that is more than an annoying diversion to an alternate airport. It’s almost never just a singular fault due to how strict protocols are. And even in an actual emergency like the plane that flipped upside down after landing, everybody survived almost unharmed and evacuated the plane safely due to the crew being trained for all possible emergencies.

I don’t have an issue flying, and do it somewhat frequently. However, I had a flight home from London on the same day the Indian flight towards London crashed just a few months ago. That was a pretty tense lift off.

My entire family, kids, parents, wife’s parents all on the same flight to Orlando a week after the helicopter DCA crash…. Yeah there was some stress lol

I dislike flying for entirely different reasons. I fly at least 4-5 times a year. Airport sucks. TSA sucks. I fly to Asia to 16 hours flight sucks. Layover sucks. If god wants me midair, take me. Idgaf. It’s entirely out of my hands. I used to love flying until I flew back to Asia 3 times in a month to take care of funeral and family finances, where family bicker over every cent. I now go on airplanes in sweats and sleeping clothes. It’s a glorified bus and I’m not looking cute for anybody.

If it makes you feel any better, the vast majority of serious accidents or crashes are from private pilots flying single engine aircraft like a Cessna. It’s just when airlines fuck up it makes the news.

In my brain I know that’s a small number. But also in my brain that feels like a big number.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported approximately 39,345 traffic fatalities in the US in 2024. That’s down 3.8% compared to the previous year! They can get the numbers even lower if they just eliminate the NHTSA!
