**Always the Same Too**
Every Thursday, without fail, my neighbor Tom would proudly trot out his new barbecue grill, ready to show off his “master chef” skills. The smell of charcoal wafted through our street, enticing everyone to peek over their fences with curiosity. But each week, as soon as he threw on the burgers, he’d inevitably lose track of time, pouring another drink and staring at the flames until they turned his organic, grass-fed patties into charcoal briquettes.
It was kind of a ritual watching him successfully ruin a perfect meal each time, and we all started making bets about what shade of black the burgers would achieve. Tom never learned, though he did develop a signature move: offering us his “grilled to perfection” burgers with a wink and a thumbs-up, while we discreetly elbowed each other and politely declined. At least we could always count on the same unintentional comedy, even if the only thing ‘perfect’ was the consistency of his failed barbecues!
