Only saying they’re in the *Carnivora* order doesn’t specify it enough to the layman, since that would imply *all* members of Carnivora are doglike. Modern taxonomy seperates carnivora into 2 suborders: *Cani*formia. (Dog-like) and *Feli*formia. (Cat-like). Sea lions, seals and walruses are collectively in the suborder *Cani*formia, doglike. They three joint the clade pinnipedia, though each is in their own respective taxonomic family.

Just a side fact, no one asked for: Seals (I know this is one a sea lion, but they’re related) are actually called Seehund (Sea-dog) in german. Edit: this may be incorrect, seems Seehund is a subspecies of “Robbe”, which is actually German for “seal”

Seals are *phoques* in Metropolitan French, but when I was in *Gaspésie* in the local dialect they are *loups de mer* (wolves of the sea).
