Emergency declared as forecast predicts up to 18 inches of snow and dangerous ice.

**What Happened:** The weather report came in like a scene from a disaster movie, declaring a state of emergency with the promise of 18 inches of snow and treacherous ice. People rushed to the stores to stock up on essentials, buying everything from bread and milk to enough snacks to hibernate through the winter. As cars slid around like ice skaters on the roads, one optimistic neighbor decided it would be the perfect time to finally test out his new snowblower. Cue the absurdity: he mistakenly pointed it toward his own front porch and launched a mini avalanche of snow sky-high, accidentally burying himself and his house in fluffy white chaos.

**Why It’s Funny:** Watching this unfold was like witnessing a real-life cartoon, with snow flying everywhere while his equally bewildered dog watched on with a look that perfectly conveyed, “You call this civilized?” The clear weather warning seemed to be a mere suggestion to some, as they performed unintentional Olympic-level snow dodging. Meanwhile, the rest of us were just trying to remember where we parked the car we hadn’t seen since last winter—probably still covered in snow from the last “state of emergency.”

This is an old one. They need to update it. “I gotta get the bread and milk! I gotta get 50 loaves of bread! So I can sell them on Facebook!”

Fun fact, that has happened during nearly every crisis. Spanish flu? People started hoarding. gas crisis of the 70s? People started hoarding.

Tips… Prepare for a power outage, not a food shortage. Charge up your phones and essential electronics in advance. If you are on well, put some water in your tub so you can flush if needed. Doesn’t need to be a lot. If the power does go out, stop opening your fridge and freezer. If it’s out for a while, move smaller stuff that is warming quickly into your garage or outside. Try and keep up with shoveling and cleaning your car if you are able. Much easier to clean small amounts more often than digging out of 2 feet of snow.

Yeah, I don’t get stocking up on a drink that goes bad if you’ve lost power

Honestly, I think it’s just that 2 or 3 days’ worth of people do their grocery shopping in a single day, so there aren’t enough of the commonly-bought food items that are usually stocked overnight, like bread and milk. For instance, where I am, the snow is coming Sunday, so all the Sunday shoppers did their weekly shopping on Saturday, which is double the normal number of Saturday shoppers. That’s all that’s happening

Same here in the UK. Why the f@ck does everyone want bread and milk? Everyone loses their minds and its not helped by the news. A bit of snow isnt a “snow bomb”

Where I live in the South, we’re looking at a solid layer of ice from freezing rain and considering it’s usually hot and humid most of the year here, our power grid isn’t really made for all that ice.

B
Big_Lab_Jagr • 5 points
None of that explains the bread and milk

M

When the power goes out for extended periods of time, people with electric stoves can’t cook so bread for sandwiches tends to be a mainstay for quick food options. Can’t really speak on the milk thing, I don’t really drink milk.

My family drinks a lot of milk, basically any time I go to the store I buy another gallon. So it’s not really the snow that makes me buy it, it’s the fact that I’m already at the store, so I buy it

But why isn’t there also a corresponding run on something to put on the bread? Peanut butter? Jelly? Lunch meat? Mayo? Nope, just bread and milk

There is, people just aren’t posting pictures of that. A lot of store shelves are picked clean. People are posting bread and milk cause it seems funny but they don’t understand what happened in 2021 in Texas. Power was out for a week. Trucks weren’t getting in to deliver food due to the ice storm. I’m not even from Texas and I remember hearing how bad it was. People froze to death. many were unprepared and ran out of food and water.

This has been the case for damn near 4 YEARS IN A ROW now. Why the fuck aren’t our politicians doing anything to make sure our grid can withstand this shit yet…. It’s been FOUR (4) FUCKING YEARS

What do you think?
