I had this great plan to surprise my best friend with a birthday cake, so I baked it the night before, only to accidentally drop it face-first on the floor as soon as I opened the fridge. Then, I thought, ‘Okay, no biggie,’ and rushed out to buy one instead, but apparently, every bakery in town was closed for a big event. I ended up bringing her a bag of stale donuts from a gas station, which—surprise, surprise—wasn’t quite the grand gesture I had in mind.
