In May of ’95, a military vehicle was pilfered from an armory in California and subsequently maneuvered through residential streets, demolishing everything it encountered.
in WTF
In May 1995, a tank was taken from a California armory and shockingly went on a rampage through suburban streets, demolishing anything it encountered.

T
That pole went down like they do in GTA
[
And they say GTA is unrealistic 🙄
S
It was based off of the 90s in LA, so this checks out
J
Man I guess 90 year olds in LA really get up to some shit
C
It’s hard out here for a pimp
I
3 is New York. Vice City is Miami. San Andres, the 5th game, is LA.
S
The original was based off of LA in the 90’s, as the view from the news helicopter. Not the 3rd one. The original was a top down game.
I
The first game is all three. You start in LC, then go to LS, and finish in VC. None of the cities have real defining features. They’re all generic downtown.
T
Who could have known back then that of all the obscure 2d games that GTA would go on to be one of the biggest IP’s of all time.
P
The real action intro for GTA 2 was amazing and set it apart as a ‘major game’ when I first saw it. “This looks like a movie!”
J
If it’s GTA rules they just need to put a volleyball net in front of the tank to stop it.
C
Nah gta rules require that the driver of the tank use the main gun as a thruster.
J
That’s how you make it fly.
W
They snap off so easily! I found this out when my friend crashed us into one sideways at 30+ mph and flipped us into a ditch but we still survived, thanks to that design ❤️.
H
Every wooden sign post on us roads has two holes near the bottom. Specially designed weak points to snap in case of collision.
Q
I have forgotten now where it happened, but some road director got tired of how lighting towers using lattice structure regularly got damaged even from quite small hits. So he ordered guard rail around each mast. Good until a car did drive straight into that guard rail. So instead of a tower intended to fail for safety reasons, the car crashed very wildly into very, very strong guard rail. The manager who ordered the guard rails “but how could I have known…”
_
This incident is literally GTA’s inspiration for putting the tank in their game.
C
Now I wanna see the inspiration for making the tank [fly.](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/e0_B1SZSuJo)
P
The cheat was probably created with cars in mind, it just so happens that the rhino is probably of the same vehicle class in the code.
F
GTA III had an actual airplane (the Dodo,) that you could fly. The Dodo was essentially a car with some extra code bolted on to make it able to generate lift, and steer in the air. The flying car cheat just applies the extra Dodo physics code to every vehicle. The tank is the most popular vehicle to use with the flying cars cheat because it is the only vehicle in the game that can generate thrust in the air. The recoil from firing the turret is strong enough to move the tank, and firing it backwards while flying keeps you moving fast enough to stay in the air. Any other vehicle begins losing speed as soon as the wheels leave the ground and is unable to maintain more than a few seconds of lift.
R
Did we all have the same childhood?
I
We’re old man
S
The reason GTA (the original) had a tank you could steal was a direct reference to this video clip being on the news.
K
They do even if you drive a car into one, they are built to fall over.
U
They do that on purpose. The pole falling over is less dangerous than someone smashing into the Immovable Object at 40+mph and getting obliterated.

Should have gone for a paint job
D
Woah! We don’t touch anything that hot!
A
Tank: \**rolls out*\* Cops: that’s not the tank we’re looking for
R
Should have gone for the fighter jet
M
Decent video quality for 1995.
G
Not sure if newscaster or amateur, but seriously working it either way.
C
News camera, we didn’t have ready access to this kind of video equipment back then… For proof watch Bob Sagget era AFV… We were lucky to capture a video that could be your uncle or a UFO … Haha ok it wasn’t that bad
3
Yeah and the fact that he’s doesn’t say stuff like “Yo what tha fuuuuck!!” – remains silently professional
D
*bro, omg bro, wtf the bro, bro!*

I looked it up because I was curious but MiniDV came out in 95. But you’re right, It probably wasn’t until at least a couple years later that the equipment for it was affordably accessible to most.
C
By this time, smaller handheld cameras were out and much better. What made news cameras better (aside from just being professional equipment) was the use of Betamax; though it died out in the consumer market, it offered much better quality and definition with the same portability in cassettes.
H
Mostly likely a news camera, but it *was* in LA, where there’d be a higher-than-average chance residents in who worked in video production had higher-end equipment on the ready.
R
News camera, Betacam probably
J
That fucking hustle for the second shot with that 30lb camera
L
Betacam most definitely.
W
Oh no. Beta.
I
Beta was the industry standard for news for decades, VHS was for the normies at home. Every commercial you watched back in the day was playing off a beta cassette Edit: please see the comment replying to this one, for a surprising revelation that TWO formats with the “beta” moniker existed. And that the one used in the television industry was different from the “home” version.
R
Just remember Betacam ≠ Betamax https://youtu.be/hGVVAQVdEOs
I
Hey thanks for that! Gotta love that the “max” cassette fits into the “cam” player, just to further confuse things, too funny
C
Beta Midler?
K
And yet 30yrs later we’re still using potatoes to capture shots of UFOs
A
Film has outstanding resolution. Even 8mm film is damn close to 720p. edit: which is irrelevant because only an idiot wouldn’t realize this was VHS or whatever.
H
That’s not film, it’s standard def videotape.
