Issued by the American Red Cross

**From the American Red Cross**
Last Saturday, I got a mysterious letter from the American Red Cross. At first, I thought it was a request for blood donation, like the ones they usually send. However, upon opening it, I found a certificate congratulating me for donating over 10 gallons of blood. Here’s the thing – I’ve never donated blood a day in my life. The closest I’ve come to a blood bank is the “Twilight” series.
The sheer confusion on my face must have been priceless. Just imagine someone who faints at the sight of a needle being heralded as a hero with a vastly inflated contribution. It’s like getting an award for running a marathon when the furthest you’ve sprinted is to catch the ice cream truck. I considered accepting the honor and wearing the certificate with pride, but ultimately decided to call and clarify the mishap. Turns out, my neighbor – an avid donor – moved recently, and our addresses got mixed up. Well, at least now I have a good icebreaker for awkward social events.

I get assignments turned in by high schoolers with these in the margins in the present. It never left. It’s one of those things that just gets handed down to the next generation somehow, someway.

It’s like our hieroglyphics

This symbol has been around since before Christ, it may literally be a hieroglyph.

If anyone is interested, the actual symbol dates back to around the 1970’s at it’s earliest documented uses. But similar versions were found in around the 1890’s.

Symbols like this go back even further with examples from the Middle Ages and even further in some occultic practices.

From what I can see. I’ve only got similar symbols in the late 1800’s, but the exact ones not until the 1970’s. Can you send some details on the middle ages reference to the symbol.

I’m not that dude, but you are correct. This dude has done extensive research on it, and while some loosely similar symbols are older, the first actual “Universal S” is from the 70’s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQdxHi4_Pvc

Thanks, yeah this seems to follow the same info I also came across when doing a deep dive on it before.

[Theres one S dating back to 1533, smack dab in the middle.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/88/Hans_Holbein_the_Younger_-_The_Ambassadors_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg/1200px-Hans_Holbein_the_Younger_-_The_Ambassadors_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg)

That one’s similar-ish, but missing the core element of the twin sets of three parallel lines.

Sidenote: what’s with the distorted skull?

T

That’s very interesting, definitely looks really similar to the S. What’s the source / context for the image?

Maybe it’s the symbol of the true god that will someday return 🤔

D

In that case I hope we don’t have it backwards.

Like “Kilroy was here”

This should be the top comment. I teach 12-14 year olds, and they still draw this. They also think their generation invented it.

The younger kids just never noticed because they were on their phones in class.

To be fair, given health trends, high schoolers might need their cholesterol checked, too.

T
TheGiftOf_Jericho • 3 points
Was gonna say, even before we did this in school it was done by those older, doesn’t really pin down an age group.
