It seems wrong to laugh.

Last Wednesday, I attended a very serious seminar about workplace ethics, where everyone was dressed in their best “I am so serious” attire. Just when the speaker began discussing the importance of confidentiality, someone’s phone went off with the most obnoxious, upbeat ringtone—think party klaxon mixed with a kazoo. As the poor soul fumbled to silence it, the whole room erupted into a fit of giggles, and for a brief moment, the weight of the discussion vanished.
It’s like we collectively forgot we were supposed to be grave grown-ups! Picture a room full of suits suddenly transformed into a giggling kindergarten class, all while the speaker’s eyebrows were doing their best impersonation of a quizzical cat. The irony was rich—while we were supposedly learning about keeping secrets, our laughter became the loudest distraction of the day. You know it’s a serious situation when you feel like laughing should come with a warning label, but honestly, sometimes a kazoo ringtone is exactly what you need to break the tension!
