One thing that is so easily forgotten is that Lava is molten ROCK. It’s heavy. Very heavy. So to see a geyser of liquid rock shooting up into the air like that, just imagine how much pressure is right under our feet.

That said, it must still be significantly less dense than the rock around it for it to spew out as such, usually due to a significant content of dissolved gasses that expand as the lava rises through the crust.

That’s why the idea of sinking in lava like Gollum at the end of LOTR is silly. You don’t sink in lava, you burn and pop around like a water droplet on a hot skillet.

Just did some back of the envelope calculations in my head. It looks like the lava takes about 7 seconds to fall to the ground, this tallys up with the height being around 500 meters or 1500ish ft. Absolutely incredible.

I live on the big island where this volcano is. It’s been erupting on and off for the past 8 months, but this was by far the largest we’ve seen. I live 70 miles away and we had peles hair and ash come down on my house. Pretty crazy.

Hair like strands of glass that get blown into the air during an eruption. It’s really beautiful stuff but horrible to breath in. Pele is the hawaiian goddess of volcanos so its called Pele’s hair.
