An oil refinery in Los Angeles experiences an explosion, sending a fireball soaring into the sky.

Los Angeles Oil Refinery Blasts, Launching a Massive Fireball into the Sky.

E
NOTE: This occurred at 9:30PM in Los Angeles, CA. Just minutes from Los Angeles International Airport. The fire broke out at the chevron oil refinery, which is a multi-mile oil processing plant.
Z
Dude that’s insane I was just there earlier today for the first time ever.
T
So YOU did this!
Z
Oh snap. I knew I got through customs and TSA way too easily lol
3
Mmmm, delete evidence, get the lawyer, hit the gym. Might apply here too.
T
Username checks out… I’m kidding, of course. Seriously, I’m sure it’s a creepy feeling right about now.

CASE CLOSED
J
FBI, this is your man!
C
Yay! Reddit, we did it!!
Z
To be fair, I was well on my flight to Chicago by the time this occurred lol. Juuuuust in case
J
Means you had the ED timed so you could watch the explosion from your plane. Smart!

El Segundo? Fun fact: that city was basically co-opted, founded by J.D. Rockerfeller et.al. Standard Oil (now called Chevron). It was named for being Standard Oil’s second refinery.
B
It’s nice that they waited til it was dark to set it off.
E
they wanted the planes flying into LAX to see a smoke signal
B
That makes sense.
G
Can’t see the smoke if it’s dark, I think it’s a fire signal.

Some pundits have predicted $8/gallon for gasoline next year because two major California refineries are scheduled to be closed within the next seven months. Total refining should decrease by 17–18%. We can’t afford to have other refineries in California blowing up in the meantime.
S
>the Phillips 66 Los Angeles refinery is scheduled to close by the end of 2025, and the Valero Benicia refinery is slated to close by April 2026. These closures are expected to remove a significant portion of California’s refining capacity, leading to concerns about potential increases in gas prices and supply. >. >Both Phillips 66 and Valero have cited the challenging and stringent regulatory environment in California as a major factor in their decision to leave the state. The cost of maintaining facilities in California and complying with state environmental regulations is significantly higher than elsewhere in the country. And California’s broader policy goal to transition away from fossil fuels contributes to the challenging operating environment for traditional refineries.

E
what’s that got to do with this
P
they were being sarcastic
D
Whoosh
C
Nothing. And that’s exactly the point.
I
It’s the El Segundo refinery. [LA Times article here](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-10-02/la-me-fire-refinery). No reported injuries so far.
O
My bet is some sort of maintenance related task was going under way and shit popped off or critical failure with process equipment. Lately there have been many incidents in other refineries near the bay in California unfortunately.
L
> My bet is some sort of maintenance related task was going under way and shit popped off or critical failure with process equipment as a maintenance guy (not in refineries but with hazardous stuff) these failures scare the hell out of me. I hope no one was hurt…
A
I’m a maintenance guy too, why do we always get blamed for everything?
W
Because it’s always your fucking fault Tom!
A
My bet is that today is take your kid to work day. The CEO took his goth daughter to work and after showing her around he had a Teams meeting to get to so she went to explore on her own. She found the dark dingy basement and thought that it was a perfect spot for a candlelight seance session. She called a few of her goth friends to join. The candles were lit and the seance was in session. It was getting intense so one of her friends decided to step away and grab a smoke. Just after he lit his cigarette he leaned against a large pipe valve that opened up. Refined oil started raining down on the candles and immediately ignited. While singing along together to The Cures “Just like Heaven” they all perished in the fire and were immediately reincarnated as bats that watched over the blaze. It’s a pretty common occurrence.
I
Yeah, I mean what else could it be?
A
If it was caused by something else I’d be surprised.
D
“Just Like Heaven”
A
Yea you’re right, I’ll edit it. Wait a minute, we’re you there?
M
Only in spirit.
I
I like the way your brain works
J
This is the El Segundo refinery and it was built in 1911. About 10 years ago there was a massive explosion and fire at the refinery in Torrance, CA (built in 1929) as well. That one happened due to a large barrier slide valve failing and causing combustion of gasses. I’d be willing to bet this El Segundo one will have a similar finding after it’s investigated.
U
Could also be hackers manipulating systems that aren’t properly secured
P
This is highly likely as they switch from producing summer gasoline to winter.
B
I’m gonna jump the gun here. This is not an attack of any kind. Certain news outlets will have this labeled a certain way within A few hours. It’s not that.
A
A refinery runs 24/7. Equipment is bound to fail at some point of time. Why is everyone assuming this is some sort of attack it happens all the time.
T
Cant wait for the USCSB youtube video on this one…
A
That’s too bad. They’ve been shut down…
