Title: My smartwatch implying mortal danger from bad sleep habits
Last night, I had one of those endless scrolling sessions that lasted well into the wee hours of the morning. Finally, I dozed off, only to be woken at 6 a.m. by my overenthusiastic smartwatch, buzzing insistently like a swarm of judgmental bees. I groggily checked the screen to find it flashing a rather dramatic message: “WARNING: Poor Sleep Detected. Long-term sleep deprivation may result in serious health risks.”
I half-expected the next alert to say, “Alert! You now have exactly 3.5 days to live, according to my brand-new Diagnostic Drama software.” My caffeine-deprived brain instantly conjured up visions of me on my deathbed, with loved ones muttering regretfully, “If only she had gone to bed at a reasonable hour…” There I was, staring in disbelief at a piece of technology that felt the need to play the role of my overprotective mother. Mark this as a lesson learned—never give gadgets the power to critique your life choices, especially ones involving a cozy relationship with your pillow.

My smartwatch suggesting serious risks from poor sleep habits

G
“According to your recent sleep pattern, you’re going to die soon.”
T
It’s even worse: “according to your sleep, you’re so depressed you’re about to just give up on living; please seek help immediately.”
A
what is death if not a very long nap
P
Fine. 2 naps added. — Their smartwatch, probably
P
That is an intense mid day nap
U
5.5 hours like how
A
Given the text the app wrote, I think OP is a shift worker, so app probably counted his normal “sleep” after night shift as a nap. Probably also the reason it’s overreacting. It’s been counting many of sleeps as “naps”.
G
Shift work absolutely destroys a body
C
Yep. The app is being dramatic, but it may not be wrong.
L
If it’s right how is it being dramatic?
C
“This is bad for you and is going to significantly harm your body over time” is true, but “Reach Out To Loves Ones” is an overly dramatic title for it.
L
It’s doesn’t say ‘reach out to loved ones.’ It says ‘ask friends and family for support.’ Those saying while similar have entirely different connotations.
C
My friend, read the largest, boldest heading in the middle of the image.
A
The header for the paragraph literally says “Reach out to loved ones”
U
“Reach out to loved ones” is exactly what the damn thing says. And then more follows below. It’s the largest damn font on that screen aside from “energy score” Are you OK? Are you having a medical episode?
A
Time to reach out to loved ones!
N
It says both.
W
Absolutely. I worked overnight for 25 + years. It really messed up.my body . I am sure it shortened my life.
R
I’m guessing OP or whatever stayed up partying all night for NYE? EDIT: I stayed up till 5am drinking beers with my cat and dog by myself so there is a low bar for definition of “partying” here
S
Hey did you all have fun though? It counts.
R
Yes 🫶especially me and the cat: pup prefers the normal 12-2am bedtime range I think. She did have a quick rally from napping at 4am though where she ran around attacking random things, got some treats and then peed in the basement. EDIT: like a good girl! She’s only 1, my first dog and I have no idea what I’m doing 🤣 Thanks for asking, I hope yours was great too!
R
“Reach out to loved ones” seems more like a “good bye! Was fun while you were alive.” Or like a threat 💀
S
The watch has a terminate host function with an IED or necro toxin deployment. Can’t have the global stat’s being tarnished. Everyone that wears the watch must be healthy. This is not optional.
G
This watch was manufactured by people without babies or toddlers I see.
D
We’re not out here getting 5+ hour daytime naps
W
What kind of toddler do you have where you can get a 5,5 hour mid day nap in?
P
Thanks watch, I’m cured from my insomnia. Can’t believe I didn’t think to just adjust my schedule!
S
The machine demands slumber
A
it’s doing what any doctor given the same information would do.
A
I haven’t slept more than 5 hours a night in 25 years. I’d expect my watch to be booking my casket and wake.
L
6 hours for me… Goes to sleep at midnight, wakes up at 6am. (buys a sleep tracker, thinks ‘hmmm, maybe I should get more sleep now that I’m getting older’) Goes to sleep at 10pm, wakes up at 4am :\^/ // I don’t use an alarm
R
Some people have a genetic trait that makes them need less sleep than most people. Alternatively, a lot of people are unable to perceive how negatively lack of sleep affects their mind. In other words, they don’t realize how worse they’re performing. At any rate, if you’re young, you wouldn’t die within 25 years. It’ll hurt you later in old age. But it’s all relative. If you were gonna live to 100, you’d still get old but you’d die before 100. It’s a counterfactual we can’t know because you only get one life. That’s why research is done, to estimate what would have happened when we have enough data to make a guess.
T
Why did I get the need-11-hours-a-day genetics?
R
Haha. It’s just bad luck. But maybe you are also just trying to catch up on sleep debt.
E
Ask friends and family *for support*. I don’t think that implies mortal danger.
G
Once a month I run updates on some special servers at work and it has to be done off hours. I do it from 4 to 6 am that day cause that time works for me. Once that app suggested I should go to bed between 2:30pm and 3:10pm.
B
I have the Samsung Galaxy watch and use the Samsung health app. It’s funny: everytime I raise my sleep score, my energy score goes down & vice-versa. I guess there’s no making that app happy at all.
I
Energy score is more about doing a consistent amount of sleep and activity every day. If you exhaust yourself with activity, you will generally sleep better but have a lower energy score.
B
Gotcha
I
Must be incredibly bad, I have never seen a warning like that in the app.
E
I think sleeping with a watch on is a bad sleeping habit.
C
“Adjust your schedule” is an overreaction?
M
“Reach out to your loved ones” makes it sound like I’m on the verge of death
O
Yeah, phrased very badly. They were supposed to make it sound like you should ask for help with life circumstances, not say your final goodbyes.
–
“Reach out to loved ones” implies you need to inform your family of some fatal illness
M
RIP
W
The stats especially the energy score are not accurate. I have been sitting here on the couch the past 2 hours watching TV. It gave me credit for taking a nap That increased my energy score to 68. My sleep score is only 36 for 4 her 45 min Actually 1AM-7 AM. no REM other nights no deep sleep and there are gaps in the record. I did not get up or even wake up Initially my Samsung 7 Smartwatch seemed accurate but to more .
Y
I got a Samsung GW7 last spring, it says I have an energy score of 69 and a sleep score of 58. I work evenings from 5pm – 11pm and am in bed by 1am, up by 9 am, then gym for 2 hours daily. I take an after noon nap around 2:30pm for about an hour. I’ve maintained this routine for the last 10 years and have been working the same hours and schedule for 25 years. After digging deeper, I’ve discovered the only thing these watches can actually measure is your heartrate and skin temps. I also can not stand wearing a watch while sleeping.
W
I think you need another nap
H
Well are you in mortal danger?
