Subtitles were assigned a single task.

I was binge-watching a new foreign film, you know, one with dramatic music and intense stares, when I noticed that the subtitles were hilariously off. Instead of translating the dialogue, they decided to just describe the scene. “The leading lady breathes deeply” flashed on the screen while she was, quite seriously, about to break into a passionate monologue. I missed half of the film because I was too busy trying to figure out what “Loud clanking sound” meant in the context of a tear-jerking betrayal.
It’s like the subtitles were having a meltdown and thought they were writing for a nature documentary instead! At one point, a character whispered something profound, and the subtitles simply said “(whispers)”—thanks, but that didn’t clear up my existential crisis. By the end of the film, I was left more confused than enlightened, wondering if I should really care about the intricate plot or just embrace the chaos of silent breathing and muffled whispers.

I’m a native Spanish speaker and I can’t guarantee that what this man sings and says is Spanish, lol.

I speak fluent Spanish and couldn’t understand most of the lyrics in the songs 😭

NATIVE SPANISH SPEAKER HERE. THAT GUY “SINGS” LIKE HE’S HELLA HIGH, BUT I APPRECIATE THE PURPOSE OF HIS PRESENTATION. SO DON’T WORRY THAT’S NOT HOW WE TALK.

R

Yeah it was a really cool performance otherwise. Just not really representative of what actual Spanish sounds like on average.

Did you cringe at some of his lyrics?

My younger cousins (two of them in their teens) sent videos from when they went to his concert with my aunt, so i knew well what to expect. Yes, i have no idea why my aunt would take them to such a concert, considering they’re all Spanish speakers and understand the lyrics very well.

Yeah I was actually shocked that his set list made it passed the network censors. Most of them are really graphic and I don’t want to sound like a grumpy old man, but offensive actually. I’m wondering if he worked his way around those songs.

You’d be surprised how lenient FCC is when swearing in other languages.

They speak English. Unless the guy in question happens to also speak Spanish, shit is going to get past the censors.

I speak Spanish (not fluent though) and I couldn’t understand but like 30 words, because songs are hard, and PR Spanish is kinda different. I would have liked Spanish subtitles to read.

PR Spanish is fucking hard. I’m a fluent Spanish speaker from birth and I feel like a white girl in high school Spanish with PR Spanish.

Caribbean Spanish in general; for some reason they speak faster and cut off syllables as they go

U
Unable-Log-4870 • 2 points
All the dialects drop syllables. The problem is that they drop different ones. Enrique’s music doesn’t drop very many, and I would guess that was intentional to make his music more accessible to the rest of the Spanish speaking world. I have no idea how aggressive Bunny was about it, since I couldn’t understand him.

> You’d be surprised how lenient FCC is when swearing in other languages. Patrick Stewart said “Shit” on network television in the 90s. (star trek) he said it in french. not a problem, apparently.

He censored the swear words tho

are you recovering ok?

M

The network censors probably didn’t speak *Puerto Rican* Spanish. It’s practically Cockney.

M

His graphic words AND all the cock n’ ball holding.
