I spent three years doing forestry work from a boat on the Mississippi River. When we got down by Quincy, Illinois we couldn’t run more than at idle or 20-40lb fish torpedoes would launch at us. My field assistant for this section of the project vastly overstated his capabilities and was frankly a childish annoying ass. He got on my nerves real bad one day when we were in an area we knew they schooled in huge numbers. He mouthed off, I gunned the engine, and he took a 40ish pound big eye carp to the head that carried him into the water. He didn’t run his mouth anymore for the remainder of that two week trip, and fired him when we got home. Not to mention the fact he spent the entire time we were In the field trying to convince me I should try meth.

So…. did you try meth or what?

Eww wtf miss me with that vegan shit. Now I have to quit meth and regret my days of using it? What an awful day.

T

Man, they always *really* want you to try it too. Just take the fucking no.

It’s actually really fucking fun. And you can be so productive on it.

That reminds me of doing meth and playing Battlefield 4 for 12-24 hours straight. It’s wild. Don’t try it. You will love it.

Why do the fish jump at you if you’re going quick?

C
Consistent_Public769 • 11 points
It’s their threat response. A good way to not be eaten by aquatic predators is to temporarily get out of the water.

The Asian carp have devastated our fresh water ecosystems. Whoever released them here deserves a life sentence behind bars.

https://dnr.illinois.gov/waterresources/asiancarp.html The fisheries argue the USDA let them import the carp, the USDA claims they didn’t know the carp weren’t properly contained, and now all of us on the Great Lakes have to hope that they don’t start turning up here next. Tom Scott did a good video about the barrier effort: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3oLeSPINOk

That’s such a shame. I wish you all the best with that endeavor. Unfortunately it’s too late for us south of Illinois. The rivers and creeks I grew up swimming/boating in are ruined. It’s definitely a heartache.

Well you’re welcome to enjoy some swimming and boating up here – Niagara region has a lot of nice spots! I hope things get better for you down there though, what a shame.

I might have to take you up on that offer, thanks❤️

I’m dumb and curious as to why having these carp in water makes it not swimmable now?

V

They are just super invasive, eat everything, and destroy the indigenous populations. They are fairly big but they don’t necessarily prevent a human from swimming. Just look up Asian carp fishing on YouTube. Here is just one example https://youtu.be/bqcbEF4c-uM?si=o-xOEIPRzhZVqa3E

Why are they ruined? Are the carp aggressive towards people?

[
[deleted] • 55 points
Besides overbreeding and making it harder for the native fish to survive, the asian carp, for some reason are attracted to the hum of boat motors, and will jump out of the water all at once while you’re moving above them, striking anyone and everything like that shown above in this video. It hurts like hell getting pelted in the head by a fish that size and makes it dangerous for everyone on the boat. Also they are considered to be of poor quality when it comes to eating them. So all around they are an invasive nuisance, that shouldn’t have been released in our waters. Kind of like the situation in Florida’s Everglades, exotic pet snakes and iguanas let loose are overpopulating and pushing out native wildlife.

That’s actually awful and I’m glad we don’t have them here

This is a video of what I explained if you’re interested. They are truly horrible to encounter. https://youtu.be/qb3R3XMcGkM?si=HKaJbInVguEGOwJ4
