I did not consent for videos of me swimming being on Reddit.

Ever consider posting on Only Frogs? I heard it’s a… *ribit*ing site
J
I’ll hop on
M
Toadally worth it
P
I almost croaked from the content overload
M
This made me croak outloud.

African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis) This one has been bred to be this colour and is unwell, the swelling and not normal, they do tho look weird even on their best days bless them. They can get this bloating for a few reasons from congenital heart issues, renal failure or bacterial infection. I think it’s not 100% understood-But it’s not a recent area of interest for me so I may be incorrect about that last part. Fun fact these guys helped us a lot with medical science – worth a deep dive.
D
I had two as pets as a kid, both lived about 7-8 years and eventually got so bloated they literally exploded. Had no idea that could happen to an animal but talk about upsetting for a 12 yr old.
_
I also had two of them. One jumped out of the aquarium one day and we didn’t find it ’til 5 years later when we moved. It was frog jerky.
S
Frogs yearn to be jerky. Where I live, garages become frog and lizard tombs
D
Florida? I ask cuz I’m here and it sure is like that everywhere in the house – frog and lizard jerky under tables, dressers, beds… crazy!
S
Yup FL
S
Exploded. I’m just… aghast. Reading that had me clutching my pearls, and I’m so disturbed I had to scroll back here to just be stunned some more.
D
One of my job sites has a lab with these guys, and has engineered some with Lightning Bug genes so that their eyes glow. Those guys often go to museums.
J
I always marvel at the fact that we can express lightning bug luciferase in an animal and create Eldritch creatures with glowing eyes. It’s something out of a creation myth.
S
When corrective laser eye surgery can combine this, I’ll finally get it done. Hell, even without the corrective.
J
Lol you could go do it tomorrow if you wanted. Get an adenoviral vector of the right serotype to infect retinal cells, grab a nanoject and a glass capillary injector rig, and squirt a few microliters into your intravitreal space. I’ve done intravitreal injections before and they’re a pain, but hey! No pain no glowing eyes!
E
Piece of cake!
J
So out of curiosity I looked it up. It’s around $550 for the viral vector that will make your cells express fluorescent proteins (AAV1 luciferase), around 3K for the micro injector. Add in some basic sterile surgical supplies, and a small fee paid to a starving tattoo artist with a steady hand, and all in all you can have glowing yellow eyes for less than 5K!
C
You want to look like a Goa’uld?
S
I was sure I was going to meet the undertaker with this comment
S
is he still around? haven’t seen an undertaker post for ages. miss reading about men plummeting from 16 feet through a table.
J
I [got got](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1lz60kt/during_eminems_sentencing_for_a_weapons_charge_in/n2zmrhg/) a few days ago for the first time.
D
He mostly posts about his rescue dog Scooby now. It all very wholesome.
S
I don’t see anything wholesome about Scooby getting thrown off hell in a cell and plumetting sixteen feet through an announcer’s table.
T
I saw a new one just the other week. They’re a lot less frequent these days though!
C
I was waiting for it as well and am now equal parts relieved and disappointed it didn’t happen.
P
this poor thing, i never knew of distress which inflates the animal. jeez
A
When I was a kid, we somehow got subscribed to a catalog of scientific equipment. It would come a few times a year and was huge, phone-book sized. My favorite part was the live specimens you could order, and I I only know *of* Xenopus because they always featured heavily. I never got around to ordering one (IIRC they were only available by the dozen to something), but they lived large in my imagination for a long time.
S
You can’t fool me u/unidan
R
Reddit has a large population of aquarium nerds.
S
Bro look at my post history . I own an aquarium, no need to tell me lol 😝
H
And I for one am grateful.

Here’s the thing…

Also responsible for the global amphibian die off due to the *Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis* fungus. That medical research they ‘helped’ us with spread that fungus all over the world and it’s been killing off amphibians everywhere as a result. (note, this is in reference to the human medical use operation of the previous comment, not about blaming the frog species itself)
U
I would suggest they are not responsible for our negligence.
7
I was referring mainly to the human use of them for medical tests and such.
U
Yeah it was a good bit of information too add so props. It’s really sad and a terrible lesson with an immeasurable cost. But these poor frogs suffered a lot for our gain so I thought it was important to make sure we aren’t blaming them so much as the unexpected outcome of breeding them on mass in poor conditions and not treating the waste water correctly.
A
Definitely being pedantic here, but the phrase is, “en masse”, not, “on mass”. It’s borrowed from French. You still used it correctly, and people will understand what you mean, but “on mass” means something different in English, whereas “en masse” means exactly what you meant.
U
Fair correction – language is not my strong suit, specifically written, I speak a lot more proficiently than I can write for the most part.
7
I work in biodiversity conservation, so issues like this are a constant thing for me.
