This emerged from a worm.

P
It’s a Nemertea worm, that thing is its proboscis, which it can evert (turn inside out), normally to capture prey, I guess in that case as a defense mechanism. (It’s got venom). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemertea
S
It looks similar to a sea cucumber evisceration, where it ejects some of their internal organs, including their digestive tract and special sticky threads. Is it the same deal?
K
ya for sure I’m getting that same type of wood from this fella too
M
If this thing gives you wood might I suggest that your kinks are getting out of hand?
M
This is reddit, we shouldn’t judge. Let’s just observe and see where it goes 🙂↕️🍵
S
Out of my hand and into a sea cucumber? Ehhhhhhhhhhhh maybe.
S
Kinda like a frog tongue ‘eh?
M
The article says the worm draws its proboscis back in, but here it seems to detach from its head.
P
IDK. Maybe this worm can abandon it like a lizard parting with its tail?
G
Perhaps damaged by pressing on it with the scissors?
T
Bump! Folks need to learn more about nature.
S
i especifically came to the coments seeking the innevitable exaplanation of what is going on in the video. that’s the best thing about reddit
I
One of the things I like the most about Reddit, especially recently, is the legitimate answer is showing higher up in the comments
K
I’ve seen people be confidently wrong times and times about largely neutral topic. And if it concern politics, or any other sensible topics, the odd of shilling increase tenfold. In general, it’s still better to double check any knowledge you might repeat or reuse later.
L
Before the Facebook exodus, this was 90% of top comments. Someone who wrote a short essay with quality information. Now we’re in a “gif integration is great” phase
C
Quora was like that years ago. Now it’s unbearable 😓
T
no, they dont. i was COMPLETLY satisfied not knowing or seeing any of this.
G
Nature needs to learn more about me.
K
They also just throw it out there as a SURPRISE. Which for some predators is enough to distract them for the worm to escape.
R
Do not want.
D
Mess with the worm, get the proboscis
P
I don’t think the venom can hurt people, I’ve seen plenty of videos of this thing doing that on people’s hands
P
The venom isn’t getting in that doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous to people if it does.
M
> Larger species often break up when stimulated, and the fragments often grow into full individuals. Some species fragment routinely and even parts near the tail can grow full bodies. [38] But this kind of extreme regeneration is restricted to only a few types of nemerteans, and is assumed to be a derived feature. Probably best to burn it just to make sure.
D
Preferably from orbit.
P
No seriously… That ain’t right
P
It’s got venom? My man, it IS Venom!
1
Well, my other guess was penis, so I’m relived.
T
Eat that and you’ll become the Founding Titan
X
Was looking for this. Thank you
R
Yo put it back in
H
RFK: *Leave my master alone!! \*screeetch\**
H
Or just lick it up. 🤢 I’ll see myself out.
T
Please close the door on your way out 🙁
H
Heheh, my bad. 🪱 🚪

Okay so for anyone wondering what the hell they just watched, because this is one of the wildest things in nature. This is a ribbon worm. That insane, branching thing that shoots out isn’t its guts or its nervous system, even tho it totally looks like it. It’s a seperate organ called a proboscis. Basically it’s a weapon for hunting. The worm keeps it coiled up inside its body in a special fluid filled sac. When it wants to attack prey or feels threatened (like it does in the video), it squeezes the muscles around that sac and the intense pressure shoots the proboscis out, turning it inside out in a fraction of a second. The crazy part is what the proboscis does. It’s often super sticky and wraps around prey like a net. Some species even have a sharp, venomous spike at the end of theirs that stabs the prey and injects it with a neurotoxin. Once it’s got the food, the worm just pulls the whole thing back in and drags the meal to its mouth. So yeah, you’re not seeing it die or explode… you’re seeing it attack. Absolutely bizarre creature.
I
But it looks like the proboscis is fully detached from the worm after it fully comes out. How does it suck it back in? Or am I not seeing where it’s still attached?
E
This is from Google AI, so who knows…but it says they may detach it as a defense mechanism to serve as a distraction while they get away. The proboscis can then regenerate.
A
It’s like the real life Spider Man of the animal kingdom, just that it’s a worm.
J
Ribbon Worm Man didn’t have the same ring to it
H
Well that explanation is almost worse than watching this video.
M
Thank you. Fascinating.
H
Why are you touching it with your bare hands yuck
M
I think you spelled the genus Alien wrong…
A
Sweet Jesus…thank God they aren’t human sized, that is the stuff of horror films, kinda blows my mind I haven’t seen such a creature in horror films, actually.
C
I think that’s its stomach? We put food in our stomach, they put their stomach over food, but I didn’t think it was meant to detach?
M
I don’t think its a worm. I think its a nematode.
F
Which is a type of worm
K
A fluke
