Some animals use fire or ambers to burn parasites in their fur or feathers. Might be what is happening here.

That’s what I thought too. It looks like he’s going after a particular spot on his inner thigh with the lighter and his hands and just happened to let it get too close to his nuts that one time.

My mom once saw birds holding moth balls in their beaks and rubbing them over their feathers. She’d put out to deter skunks from living under her shed.

This behavior is called “Anting”. So called because they usually use ants that way. There’s no definitive answer but it’s believed the formic acid in the ants keeps mites and such from taking up residence in the bird’s feathers. It’s surprisingly common I think like 300+ species have been documented to do it.

Trying to get rid of lice would be my guess.

I have used bic lighters to kill fleas on my jeans before. Fire really is the most effective and quick way to kill the buggers.

We used to have an old barn, a chicken house really, on our property we never went in. Well we had some cats but they went missing and like a month later I went in there for some reason and my legs started fucking burning. I rush outside and they are covered in large patches of black. Fleas. Had to jump in the pool, they were like an oil slick on top of the water. I didn’t know they could be that fucking bad. We bug bombed the building and found all the dead cats, they had no fur so we could only assume it was the fleas. For a second, once I stepped out of the barn and could see my legs, I was convinced some Eldritch monstrosity was still clinging to me because it was just these writing patches of black that caused searing pain. Fleas are fucked up, but water works well.

Wait the fleas swarmed the cats to death? Holy fucking shit

K

Massive skin infection from the infestation is likely what actually killed them. Rough…
