**What Happened:** Last week, I decided it was time to invest in a little self-improvement and attempt some online tutorials. My goal? To learn how to make homemade pasta. I grabbed my flour, eggs, and a newfound sense of confidence, only to realize halfway through that the video tutorial’s host was using an industrial-sized mixer while I was wielding a whisk like it was a criminal weapon. By the time I was done mixing, my kitchen looked like the aftermath of a flour explosion, and I could barely tell if I was making dough or preparing for a science experiment gone wrong.
**Why It’s Funny:** In the end, I didn’t produce the delicate strands of pasta I envisioned but more of a gooey, shapeless mass that, I’m pretty sure, could have passed for an art installation titled “Pasta: A Tragic Love Story.” As I stared at my creation, I couldn’t help but laugh—between the mess, the fail, and the fact that I was now standing in a cloud of flour looking like a baking ghost. It turns out, not all online tutorials come with a warning label for disaster!

My dad always watches this show where these two guys find old cars repair them and then sell them. And it always annoys me whenever I go round and visit and he has it on. The reason is one guy is the mechanic and the other guy is like the trader. And the trader guy will go “so we bought this battered old Mercedes for £12k, spent £8k on materials and then sold it for £23k! That’s a tidy profit of 3000 pounds!” And its like mate your mechanic has been working on that car for 3 weeks straight, whilst doing all the work for free in his state of the art garage supplied and maintained by the TV show. If the TV show wasnt paying yours and his wages youd have made a lose. But every week they make it out like their restoring of these old cars and selling them is making great profit, when in reality the only reason it works is because both of them are getting paid by the TV show. They make out like anyone could do it, same as half these YouTube video tutorials etc. When the reality is that its the TV show money/YouTube money that enable these things being possible.

Im glad car youtubers are often very open about the finance side of it. Hoovies garage is famous for busting out the books and talking about cost of repairs for vehicles. Tavarish being open about trying to build his super car is so cool too

Ill be honest I aint super into cars, but my dad is. When I point this out to him though he just laughs and says “yeah its obvious bull. But i like seeing the old cars get made pristine” Which i can’t be mad at him for but boy that show pisses me off.

Yeah i had the pleasure of doing a custom build engine on my dream car that I bought new from the dealership. People have no idea how expensive and time consuming that shit is

I’m the same as in my dad is a car guy and I couldn’t give a shit about cars but he’s always telling me about ad’s of cars for sale, specifically guys with rusted frames with original VIN’s on them asking $30-$50K thinking they have a gold mine. It would cost $100,000 to restore the car and when finished it might sell for $80k on a good day. The right car might be worth it but for the most part, there is no money in restoring cars.

It’s wheeler dealer. I liked that show when there was the old mechanic Ed. He was teaching you some things meanwhile the new one and the newer one just say “I’m gonna replace this with the new one”. My dad was a mechanic and he liked the show as well. But yeah that poor mechanic working his ass off only for a profit of 1.5k£

And its like mate your mechanic has been working on that car for 3 weeks straight Yup. And when you do the math, just using minimum wage, you realize that 1/3 of the “Profit” just pays that single person a minimum wage for the time that they spent. And if you paid them what their wage should actually be (if they got that job at a generic local company), you’d be taking a loss. Now, if you ENJOY working on cars and patching them back up in your free time, cool. You can get paid to do your hobby. But the clutch is it will never pay WELL. These tasks end up being businesses (not some guy in his garage) for good reasons. The work goes faster when you have a platform to elevate the vehicle on instead of using jacks or wheel ramps constantly. The parts are cheaper when you have a contract with a supplier and/or buy in bulk. The labor is cheaper because you can pay some guy minimum wage to do the busywork, while the mechanic does the actual hard (trade skill) stuff. You do all those things, and realize that a proper garage company could have spent $6,000 on parts, $1500 on labor, and made $3500 in actual profit on the same project.

One of my favorite jokes that is made on one channel “make something” is when he uses a complex tool and says, “if you don’t have a [high end tool] just use your [higher end tool]” An example would be: “If you don’t have a bandsaw just use your CNC” or “if you don’t have a table saw use your laser cutter”
