What exactly is a “Stone”? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I went to visit my friend in England, and being from the States, I thought I understood the metric system. “Oh wow, you weigh 70 stone? That’s impressive!” I exclaimed, completely oblivious to the fact that her weight was actually 70 kilograms. She gave me a confused look, and the amusement began as I sat there drafting a mental checklist of what 70 stone even looked like. Was it like a boulder? Did she just roll out of bed after hibernating for the winter?
The funniest part was my desperation to save face as I furiously Googled “stone to pounds conversion” while trying to look calm. Turns out, one stone is 14 pounds. So if I had managed to actually spread the rumor she weighed 980 pounds, I’d probably need more than a boulder-sized apology! Now I can’t help but chuckle whenever someone mentions a “stone”; all I can picture is my friend struggling to lift an enormous rock just to prove a point.

And the plural is “stone”, not “stones”. That difference can serve as a shibboleth.
