Turns out you have to know something about knots to intentionally tie a loose one.

A highwayman’s hitch tied the wrong way would have probably worked here, but I wouldn’t have trusted it personally; this is a stupidly dangerous stunt. With a properly tied highwayman’s hitch, a quick yank on the working end undoes the knot. But if you tie it “wrong”, it’s a yank the standing end that undoes it.
