Yeah, I understand the ecology. Something tells me the ants wouldn’t starve. But if the caterpillar is getting swarmed, put it out of its misery and the ants still get their meal.

I remember reading that scientists think insects don’t feel pain. Is that still the understanding? Because this dude definitely understands pain.

They don’t feel pain as we think of it. It’s not a complex series of nerve endings communicating with the brain. But it’s silly to assert that insects don’t experience aversive stimuli. Very few organisms would survive otherwise, because they just wouldn’t react to being damaged.
